District President Brenda Metcalfe from Durham West. President Jean began our program by lighting a candle in celebration of 100 years of Women's Institute, sharing this ceremony with all members throughout Ontario. She said that W.l. is an educational organization organization for personal growth, self-improvement, leadership development and community action. Valued assets are the friendships gained and renewed. W.l. is linked provin- cially through the Federated Women's Institute of Ontario, nationally through the Federated Institutes of Canada, and worldwide through the Associated Country Women of the World. Members, each bedecked with a beautiful corsage, answered the Roll Call - "What have I accomplished with a Women's Institute life skill?" Thanks to W.L we have word- recognition and phonetic programs programs for Grades I and IV; traffic traffic lights at dangerous intersections; intersections; "best-before" dates on pre-packaged fresh foods; flashing lights on school buses; music in elementary schools; brighter lines on highways; "Living Will"; and wrapped bread in plastic bags. Janice Croft conducted the devotion, opening with Prayer and using Matthew ll-V-28- 30. We sang hymn 502. Then, using Betty Turcotte's book, we read "On Eagles Wings". This illustrated how we could approach life, we could sit on the rocks and go to no other heights or we could soar like the Eagle, maybe struggling but not giving up. We have the Love of God and friends to help us. This reading prepared us for our guest speaker. Janice introduced introduced Mr. Ted Farrow from Whitby. One of the most amazing amazing persons we have heard. Ted Farrow is a long time volunteer with the Clarington and Oshawa/Whitby Cope Mental Health Programs. He has dedicated dedicated hours of service to improve the wellbeing of his fellow citizens. In 1980, at age 47, Ted had a stroke which resulted in the loss of his speech and the use of his right side. He was forced to retire from his job at General Motors. In 1982 and 1983 he suffered two more strokes and in 1988 a heart attack.
