- The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, March 8, 1997 Page: Checker Variety Additional Atoms Take Lead Over Aurora With the start of the playoffs, the Checker Variety Toros have given the fans an excellent display of effort, winning two of the three games against Aurora, in the beginning of a seven games series. After receiving a bye in the first round of playoffs, Checker Variety Additional Atoms were keen to get on the ice when they confronted Aurora at Darlington on February 15. The Toros displayed a diligent effort, working hard at controlling the play, passing and using the point well. It was Aurora who took an early lead in the first period and then scored twice in the second giving them a three goal lead. This, however, did not stop the Toros as they continued to press Aurora's goalie and finally it paid off. In the middle of the second period, the Toros were successful in getting the puck past the Aurora goaltender. Brendan Kalijundic scored the first goal during a power play when there was a scramble in front of the net. Bryan Mercer and Mik Boisvert each picked up an assist. After that it was all Toros, who came back hard and fast to win the game 4-3. Brendan Kalijundic came back again quick when Jason Morrison took a wrist shot from the point and Brendan rebounded the puck home. Then a scramble in front of the net allowed Jason Emond to flick the puck high over the shoulder shoulder of Aurora's goalie. The winning goal was scored by Jason Emond who received a pass from Brent Stadler and backhanded the puck high in the top comer of the net to win the game 4-3. Mik Boisvert picked up two assists as well as Bryan Mercer, Ryan Gamiss, Andrew Oliver and Drew Sharp each picking up an assist. In the second game, the Toros continued continued to be thwarted by Aurora's awesome goaltender. The effort was again present as the Toros worked hard to get the puck in the net. Shane Gonsalves scored the first goal for the Toros, placing the puck in the top corner corner of the net with assistance from Jesse Bradburn. Andrew Oliver popped in the goal to tie the game at 2- 2 with Jason Emond and Ryan Garniss assisting. Fans then felt the pressure on the ice as the Toros went into overtime, overtime, but came up short with Aurora scoring when the Toros were short- handed. The game ended 3-2 for Aurora. Now with the series tied, both teams took to the ice on February 19. The third game proved to be just as close as the others. Aurora took the lead in the first period. The second remained scoreless, but the third proved to be the Toros. Justin Ross put the Toros on the scoreboard by picking up a pass from Mik Boisvert and placing placing the puck low, and hard on the stick side from the point. It was Andrew Oliver who scored the winning goal when there was a scramble in front of the net and slid it home.
