The Clarington/Courticc Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, March 22,1997 Page 9 Canadian Statesman Toros Eliminated from Playoffs After a first round bye, and a second round victory over Peterborough,, the Canadian Statesman Minor Atom Toros were eliminated from the OMHA playoffs by the Whitby Wildcats. It was a good, hard-fought series with the momentum shifting several several times during the course of each game. In the end, the tight checking and slightly hungrier Whitby squad prevailed. prevailed. The Toros now enter the York-Simcoe league playoffs where they will face Pickering. With the first round bye, the Statesman boys were a little little rusty with the series opener opener with Peterborough. However, near the half-way point of the game, they found their legs and skated to a 5-2 triumph. Steven Omelko scored a pair, with singles going to Adam Cryderman, Jeff Johnston, and Kevin Loder. Assists were credited to Cryderman, Chris Trace, Alec Hamilton, Ryan Fowler and goaltender Kevin Bowles. Game two back in Peterborough was very tight checking, and the surprised Toros lost in overtime 1-0. Games three and four saw a return to form for the Toros as they defeated Peterborough 9-0 and 8-2 and clinched the series. Good puck movement and team play made all the difference in the world. Point getters in the two games included Corey Oliver (la), Brandon Murphy (2g, 5a), Bradley Griffin (lg), Alan McGrath (3a) Eric Button (la), Kevin Loder (2g, 2a) Jeff Johnston (3g) Sean Peden (lg, 2a), Adam Cryderman (2a), Ryan Fowler (3g, 3a), Chris Gerrits (la), Steven Omelko (2g, la), Alex Hamilton (3g, la). The series opener with Whitby was in Brooklin and the Toros were flat and did not give a good account of themselves. An untimely injury to goalie Justin Andrews meant the team had to employ the services of Jesse Francis, who regularly toils for the Major Novice Toros. Jesse was given the start in game one, and except for a couple of bad bounces, he held the lifeless Toros even for most of the game. The result was a 3-1 Whitby victory victory with Jeff Johnston from Corey Oliver doing the scor- ing for the Toros. Game two was a more by Telma R. Grant r.p.t. Acupuncture and Knee Pain QUESTION: Telma, help me understand understand how acupuncture helps my knee pain. The most common question question my patients ask me is "How do you find the points". In other words, the selection of treatment points in acupuncture. acupuncture. I use the biomechanical approach to point selection. For the knee, I examine the movement of the joints. Treatment is directed to the joints that do not move. The purpose of treatment is to increase movement of the joints. In acupuncture for knee pain, it is important to compare compare the turning out or external external rotation of the thigh (femur), (femur), versus the turning out of the lower leg (tibia). If the blocked movement, i.e. the one that will not turn, is the thigh, then point selection will involve the sacro-iliac (S-l) joint and the hip joint. In other words, the knee pain stems from lack of thigh movement due to S-l or hip joint blockage. In acupuncture, lack of movement is the same as an energy blockage. Treatment is directed to clear the energy flow and facilitate movement. The second possibility is that the knee pain results from the lower leg being unable to turn out. Point selection here involves involves the ankle and/or fibula (the long skinny bone on the outside of the lower leg and ankle). In addition to regular orthopaedic orthopaedic examination of the knee joint, I also evaluate the knee joint the acupuncture way. From a muscle and joint perspective, knee pain can arise from any structure in the knee joint complex: the patella (knee cap), the meniscus (disc), the ligaments, or the knee muscles themselves. While it is essential to know which structure in the knee is causing the knee pain, knowing knowing this alone does not reveal what the biomechanical or movement causes of the knee problem is. This is the usefulness usefulness of the acupuncture examination. For example the kneecap may not be gliding well on the thigh, typical patel- lofemoral syndrome, because the thigh is , blocked. Unblocking the thigh movement movement through acupuncture may allow this knee cap movement to improve. Thus acupuncture addresses the biomechanical (lack of movement) movement) cause for the knee pain. It is only after I have accurately accurately identified the acupuncture acupuncture that I commence treatment. treatment. Typically, three points are used in treatment. Exercise is important to ensure best mobility for the knee joint. A reminder: Any one can claim to- provide "physiotherapy". "physiotherapy". The Toros stormed back to tie things up and take the lead only to have Whitby reply and then retake the lead. The Toros pressed and tied the game with about two minutes remaining to. force overtime. However, in overtime it was Whitby who capitalized on their opportunity to win the game 6-5. Ryan Fowler had a goal and an assist, with Kevin Loder, Alan McGrath, and Adam Cryderman with two goals, were the other marksmen. marksmen. Alec Hamilton, Corey Oliver, and Steven Omelko each earned one assist. Game three back in Darlington was again a very tight, hard-fought game. And, while the Toros played well enough to win, they could only secure an overtime tie at 1-1. Ryan Fowler, unassisted, was the goal- scorer. Game Yoür ' meant the Toros had to win. A tie would provide Whitby with the point - they needed to claim the series. Again, Whitby jumped out to leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but the Toros fought back and took a 3-2 lead. Whitby tied the game, and entering the third period, it was 3-3 and anybody's game. The Toros struck for two goals in the first four minutes and seemed destined to win. However, the never-say-die Whitby team perservered and through some hard- fought battles in the Toros zone, they fought back to tie and. take the lead. An empty net goal put the final nail in the coffin of the Toros with the final score 1-5. Jeff Johnston scored a pair, with singles to Sean Peden, Alan McGrath, and Brandon Murphy. Ryan Fowler picked up three assists, Adam Cryderman had two and Sean Peden, Steven Omelko and Corey Oliver had one assist each.
