Page 10 The Claringlon/Courticc Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, March 22, 1997 Newcastle #3 Novices Win Bragging Rights Over Newcastle # 1 The March break meant one thing to the Newcastle #3 Novice: HOCKEY! With a schedule of five games in seven days, the team played its best hockey of the year. Saturday, March 8, found Number Three facing off against home town rival Newcastle number one. Paul Ferguson drew first blood for Newcastle on a Craig Procknow feed. Kyle Whealy scored a breakaway goal to put Newcastle up 2-0 at the end of the first. Camden Matthews scored the only goal of the second on a fine passing play from Jeffrey Frenette and Ian Brash. Paul Ferguson scored the final goal of the game at 6:49 of the third. The strong defensive defensive play of Karen Wiltshire and Kyle McLeod helped to anchor goaltender Paul Shkordoff's 4-0 shutout. March 10th, found Newcastle at the Bowmanville Rec. Centre, competing in Bowmanville's March Break Tournament. Day one found Newcastle squaring off against Bragg's Birdseed. Neither side was able to "pop the mesh" until the second period. Camden Matthews scored Newcastle's first on a "highlight reel" pass from Jeffrey Frenette. Seconds later, Jeffrey Frenette scored on a Michael Vossen feed to put Newcastle up 2-0. By the end of the second, second, Bragg's had scored one of their own to pull within one. At 9:08 of the third, Camden Matthews scored the game's deciding goal on a pretty play from Matthew Scatterty and James Parks. With minutes left, Bragg's scored their second, but it was too late. Final score: Newcastle 3, Bragg's 2. Brimming with confidence from the previous day's performance, performance, Newcastle faced off against Bowmanville Sport Shop. Sport Shop scored the only goal of the first to hold a slim 1-0 lead. Kyle Whealy put Newcastle on the board at 8:59 of the second, scoring an unassisted goal. Less than a minute later, Kyle Whealy scored on a fine breakaway effort to put Newcastle up 2-1. The lead was to be short-lived as Sport Shop replied with two of.their own to maintain a 3-2 lead at the end of two. Sport Shop scored at the start of the third before Kyle Whealy completed completed his hat-trick on a fine play from Andrew Weckcrle and Paul Ferguson. Sport Shop fired another before the end of the third to take home a well-earned 5-3 victory. After a fine team effort in their morning loss, Newcastle looked forward to playing arch-rival Bowmanville Eagles. Kyle Whealy opened the scoring for Newcastle on a perfect pass from Craig Procknow. Eagles replied with one of their own to tie the score at the end of one. The second period was a tremendous defensive battle, with neither side able to "pop the twine". The third period was all Eagles as they scored three unanswered goals to secure the 4-1 victory. Despite two tremendously strong team performances in the Bowmanville tourney, Newcastle found themselves winless in two and very eager to complete their final playoff game on a winning note. Their opponent on March 15 was Newcastle #1. Kyle Whealy opened the scoring for Newcastle, on a great Michael Vossen feed. Minutes later, Kyle Whealy popped another with the helper coming from Jeffrey Frenette. Camden Matthews scored Newcastle's third of the first period, with the assists going to Jeffrey Frenette and Paul Ferguson. Michael Vossen scored an unassisted marker to put Newcastle up 4-0 at the end of two. With the spirited play of Tyler Watchorn and Michael Toushan, you just knew there was more coming in the third. Matthew Scatterty scored the first of his career, with the assist going to Camden Matthews. Camden Matthews scored an unassisted marker to further Newcastle's lead. With less than a minute to go, Paul Ferguson scored on a fine individual effort. The final goal of the game and the hat-trick clincher was scored by Kyle Whealy with the helper going to Paul Ferguson. Final score: Newcastle #3 - 8, Newcastle #1 - 0. Although this game was a fine team effort, special mention mention must be given to goal- tender James Parks for earning earning the shutout in his only start of the year. With their playoff season now over, Newcastle looks forward to some strong competition competition in their final two exhibition games. McGregor IDA Wins / B / Title In Tournament From page 9 for the anxious crowd. Dan Reed came close for McGregor, with a low hard shot, but the game was scoreless scoreless until late in the third when Adam Pearce scored for McGregor from John O'Connell and Derrick Watt. It was a well-deserved shutout for goalie Evans and trophies for the tough and gritty McGregor team. Well done! This year's battle involved a combination of the All-Ontario teams from 1978-79 and 1980-81, against the All-Ontario finalist team from 1994-95. The game, dubbed "The Battle for Bragging Rights," wan an entertaining affair, with many of the fond memories of years past conjured up by the players and fans.
