Page 12 The Clarington/Counice Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, March 22, 1997 Newcastle Lions News Club Welcomes Five New Members A special meeting of The Newcastle Lions Club took place on March 12 in the Lions Room at the Newcastle Community Hall. Zone Chairman, Lion John Ogden from the Bewdley and District Lions Club was on hand to make his official visit and take part in the installation installation of five new members of the Newcastle club. President Terry Graham acted as chairman and welcomed welcomed thirty-one Lions and guests as they sat down to a delicious meat pie dinner catered by the- Newcastle U.C.W. After dinner Lion Mike Swaga introduced Zone Chairman, Lion John Ogden, remarking that Lion John has been a Lion since 1990, was born in England and works as an electrical engineer for General Motors. Lion John congratulated the Newcastle Club for their past accomplishments accomplishments and commented on the great esteem in which this club is held within the Lions community. He also praised the club for backing Lion Terry for the position of Zone 10 S. Chairman, a position position for which he has been recently acclaimed. Donations were approved to the Ontario Street Public School for their Quebec exchange program and the Brockville Steel Band for participating in the Lions International Convention next summer in Philadelphia. A thank you letter was received from the Durham Regional police services for a recent donation. . Birthday salutations and a 15 year service pin Were conferred conferred on Lion Dave Gibson and 15 year pin was also pre- Animal Control Report In February, 22 dogs and cats were picked up by animal animal control officers in Clarington, while 28 dogs and cats were brought in by other people. Over the month, 22 dogs were either retrieved by their owners or sold to local residents, residents, while one cat was retrieved and 18 were sold. No animals were sold to research. However, one dog and three cats were dead on arrival and four cats had to be Police Briefs Tuesday, March 18 Driver arrested -- A 33- year-old Oshawa man was arrested following a collision which took place at the Skylight Donut booth at the Pioneer Gas Station on Liberty St. S, Bowmanville. A driver struck the booth and was arrested a short time later in a van described by police as having having been stolen in Oshawa. There were a number of charges laid. Monday, March 17 Vehicle Demolished in Fire -- A vehicle was found outside a home on Duke St., Bowmanville, engulfed in flames. The meeting concluded with an induction ceremony conferring Lion status on five new cubs to the Newcastle Pride. Zone Chairman John Ogden chaired the ceremony and the new Lions, Jim Brown, Carl Good, John Clark, Jim Leslie and John Mutton were warmly welcomed welcomed and congratulated by the rest of the club. Special guest at the next meeting will be District A3 Chairman, Jon Moore. Jon will be making his official visit. Painting "Under Water" at March Break Bonanza Kids attending the Municipality of Clarington's March Break Bonanza program at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex last week spent a morning creating this colorful underwater mural. In addition to arts and crafts, the children aged 5 to 12 played games, listened to stories and had a lot of fun. The town's March Break Bonanza program also featured day trips to Toronto and area hot-spots such as the Royal Ontario Museum, the CN Tower, the Hockey Hall of Fame and the Metro Zoo.
