I i The Clarington/Counice Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, March 22,1996 Page 23 DURHAM BRIEFS Clothesline Project From Thursday, March 20 to Sunday, March 23 "The Clothesline Project" will be on display at the the Durham Regional Police headquarters located at 77 Centre Street North in Oshawa. The Clothesline Project consists of over 300 customized customized t-shirts representing women and children in the Durham Region who have suffered abuse or been killed in domestic incidents. The t-shirts have been made by the survivors and each color represents a different different type of abuse. This sobering display is being presented at the police headquarters to emphasize a commitment within the police service to understand and deal with issues of domestic violence. The display will run from 10 æm. to 7 p.m. daily Woman Faces 46 Fraud Charges A 31-year-old Oshawa woman has been charged with 46 fraud-related offences. Durham Regional Police launched an investigation following following complaints from a retailer and bank that merchandise merchandise and credit cards were being mailed to two post office boxes in Ajax and Whitby. A search warrant conducted conducted at a residence in Londonderry Street, Oshawa, uncovered personal financial information of 56 people. Some of the information was handwritten on note paper, but cheques, invoices and Visa statements were also recovered. Norma Jeanne Boughner, of Oshawa, has been charged. The approximate loss in these frauds is $44,500. The accused was able to obtain confidential financial data as a result of her previous previous employment with Tupperware and also through baby-sitting and visiting her neighbors. The Names and Visa account numbers would them be used to order goods from mail order houses or to apply for credit cards in other people's names. Ex- Union Manager Charged As a result of a complaint filed by the Ministry of Finance, members of the Durham Regional Police Major Fraud Unit commenced commenced an investigation into the misappropriation of funds at the Oshawa Community Credit Union, 214 King Street East, Oshawa. The investigation revealed funds were illegally obtained from the Credit Union between July 1988 and February 1990. Police said these funds were obtained by creating loans for non-existing non-existing borrowers and then paying paying these loans off by creating further false loans and overdrafts. overdrafts. Investigation also revealed funds were taken from the General Ledger Term Deposit Accounts to pay accruing interest and pay off outstanding loans. The total amount of funds misappropriated is $112,491.17. Charged is Reginald Francis Cooksey, age 52, of Phillips Rd. in Port Hope. He held the position of manager and secretary treasurer treasurer of the Oshawa Credit Union from 1969 until September 28th, 1996. Pedestrian Dies A 22-year-old woman from Aurora died as result of injuries after being struck by a car on Regional Rd. 12 near Cannington on Sunday, March 9th. The woman had been a passenger in a vehicle which had gone off the roadway shortly before 6:30 p.m. after sliding on a patch of ice. The victim was standing at the shoulder of the road when a second vehicle, approaching approaching westbound on Regional Road 12, also slid on the pavement, skidded sideways and left the roadway where it struck the victim. Employment Proqrams In Durham Region The Ministry of Education has allocated funds to Durham College, John Howard Society, Unemployed Help Centre and YMCA to deliver the Career and Employment Preparation Program (CEPP) in Durham Region. Together the agencies will receive funding to cover operational operational costs, as well as subsidies for employers to offset the costs of on-the-job training for new employees. The program begins April 1, 1997 and will support over 2000 participants to overcome employment barriers, including 775 on-the-job training placements. Through workshops and one-to-one counselling, the program program will assist youth and qualifying adults with employment preparation, establishing and setting career goals, and prepar-. ing action plans. The program will also provide paid on-the- job training for qualifying participants.
