( Pace 6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, March 26,1997 A Your Guide To: Health, Hobbies and Entertainment J Green Thumbs Get Summer with Herb ffiofpw m by Lorraine Manfredo Staff Writer Forget the groundhogs and the robins. The surest sign of spring is when green-thumbs get that old familiar itch to get out in the garden. About 30 eager gardeners turned out to Rckkcr's Garden Gallery at Maple Grove on Saturday, March 8th, to hear Tim Freeman talk about growing herbs. His presentation was the first in a series of five free information seminars this spring at Rekker's designed to give new and veteran gardeners gardeners all kinds of ideas. Tim Freeman, who runs Freeman Herb Centre in Beamsville, told the audience growing herbs is not as difficult difficult as one might think. "It's quite simple and the best way to start is to experiment," he says. There are so many herbs to choose from -- flowering ones pretty enough for the perennial garden, lemon- scented ones ideal for walkways, walkways, herbs to grow inside apartment windows and ones to liven up salads; vegetables, soups, stuffings and roasts. Mr. Freeman recommends fresh anise, caraway, coriander coriander or dill in a salad. Oregano or basil can give a boost to bean dishes, and fennel or lemon thyme add zing to fish. In addition to information about basic feeding and care of herbs, Freeman offered tips on how to finally turn backyard herbs into indoor plants after the growing season. season. A good way to gradually acclimatize the plants is to leave them outside during the. day and bring them indoors at night until they get used to the indoor climate. As far as plant-loving bugs go, Freeman says herbs arc not immune from the little pests, except maybe feverfew. But, a few bugs outdoors arc nothing to worry about, he says. Rarely will a gardener get a devastating infestation outdoors, outdoors, but indoor plants arc more vulnerable because they may be the only source of bug food. In that case, Freeman suggests a mild detergent bath. Tip the whole plant pot- sidc-up and immerse the upended plant in a tub of lukewarm, soapy water. Immediately rinse in the same manner using clean,' fresh water. Herbs of all varieties are available at Rckker's Garden Gallery Upcoming seminars at Rekker's include Hanging Baskets on Saturday, April 12; Perennials on April 19; Interlocking Walks and Patios on April 26; Water Gardening on May 3. Seminars start at 11:00 a.m. Admission is free. IDEAS SHARED -- Tim Freeman demonstrates plastic tree guard filled with gravel can be inserted centre of a planter to help hold the soil. It was just the clever ideas that came up during Mr. Freeman's herb seminar at Rekker's Garden Gallery. rograms For Children at the Library Babytime Babies ages 1-23 months and their parents or caregivers are invited to join us for a half-hour of songs and finger- plays!
