Page 4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, April 2, 1997 Section Two Eagle Atom Selects Snatch 'A' Championship The CRHL Eagle Atom Selects swooped down to snatch up the 'A' championship championship in the annual Agincourt Valentine's Tournament. In the first game, the Eagles faced Thornhill. Coming from a 1-0 deficit in the first period, Wilson, set up by Mike Daly and Brad Mcllroy, hammered the puck in to tic the game. Quickly after, Matt Savoie gave the Eagles the go ahead marker, assisted by Derek VanHcuvclen and Josh Kewell. Then once again, Wilson was there to ring one in off the post after Kevin Connelly flew end to end to set the play up. With their hopes dashed, the Thornhill team settled back to watch our men play a finesse game like only they can play. Michael Bertoni, on a nice pass from Alan Baker, put it "up where the peanut butter lives," and Doug Myles, breaking in his "lucky" Gilmour stick, earned a hat trick. The Eagles flew strong and hard in their second game as West Hill suffered a 5-0 defeat. Doug Myles worked his magic, nailing in an unassisted unassisted end to end goal, to open the scoring. Michael Daly posted two, Kewell and Wilson rounded out the scoring. scoring. Assists went to the following: following: Connelly, Michael Oliver, Kyle Brown, Myles and Wilson. In the semi-finals, the Scarborough Sabres faced our soaring Eagles. Again, Myles gave the cry to battle, opening the scoring assisted by Oliver and Wilson. Kewell, with help from VanHcuvclen, rocketed one by the stunned Sabres goalie. Oliver, from Daly, followed followed suit with goal number three. A Sabre goal came next which served to spur Wilson on to pot another goal. Myles rounded out the scoring, from Oliver and Brock Deighton. The championship game saw the Eagles face off against the host team, the Agincourt Canadians. No scoring in the first served to increase the tension. But, early in the second, Deighton tucked one neatly under the Canadians netminder, assisted assisted by Kewell and VanHcuvclen. VanHcuvclen then made a superb forechecking effort to come up with the puck and land one in the top shelf. Next, Brown took charge at the blue line passing the puck to Daly, who drilled it straight into the top corner. Daly popped one final one in on a strong pass from Deighton and the Eagles went home 'A' champions. Outstanding nctminding by the dynamic duo, Curtis Carrière and Mike Barter, allowed only three goals in four games. To Challenge Orangeville in All-Ontarios Checker Variety Atoms were in full control when they defeated Newmarket in the Division Finals. It was definitely definitely the best display of hockey that the Toro boys have played all year. Keeping a cool head, Toros played with determination and excelled at passing and dominating dominating the game in Newmarket's end. The first game of the series took place in Newmarket, and the Toros came out fighting for the win. Controlling the puck well and rushing to the net to pick up the rebounds, enabled Toros to win the game 4-1. The Toros got off to an early start in the first minute of play when Jason. Emond carried the puck over Newmarket's blueline and placed the puck in the top stick hand side of the net, taking taking a one goal lead. Brendan Kalijundic and Brent Stadler assisted on the goal. Ryan Garniss back-handed the puck in the net during a scramble in front of the net, with help from Jason Emond. It was Mik Boisvert who gave the Toros a three goal lead with a shot high to the glove side. Assists going to Brendan Kalijundic and Drew Sharp. The final goal was scored by Ryan Garniss on an open net, assisted by Andrew Oliver and Brent Stadler. The second game of the series proved to be another example of excellent hockey from our Toro boys: Like the first game, the Toros came out quick, scoring early in the game. Ryan Garniss got things rolling in the first minute of the game when he passed the puck to Brent Stadler who snapped .it from the point and Andrew Oliver easily slid the puck in the net. The Toros took the lead, but Newmarket came back quickly to even the score at 1-1. Then it was Brendan Kalijundic displaying displaying an awesome effort to keep the puck in Newmarket's end, which allowed Mik Boisvert to pass the puck over to Bryan Mercer who one-timed the puck home. In the second, Mik Boisvert received a pass at centre ice and made a rush up the ice to take a shot on net. Shane Gonsalves picked up the rebound and placed the puck overtop of a fallen goalie. The Toros took a 3-1 lead, but Newmarket got one more goal. After that it was all Toros. Andrew Oliver made a pass back to the point and Brent Stadler took a slap shot on net with Ryan Garniss rebounding it in. The final goal was scored by Jason Emond who received a pass by Brent Stadler and placed it high, glove side, of Newmarket's goalie. The Toros beat Newmarket 5-2. Fans were ecstatic watching watching these boys beat Newmarket and move on to the all-Ontarios. The team proved how well they can play, and if they continue to play together and put forth a solid effort as shown against Newmarket, they will surely come out number one in the Ontarios.
