Athletics have been a part of Amanda's life for many years. For ten years she figure skated competitively competitively until a back injury forced her to change her focus. Amanda now plays basketball, volleyball and soccer for different teams at Clarke. While these arc also very demanding sports, there is less stress on the back, making it possible for Amanda to continue to compete. compete. Outside of school, Amanda plays volleyball for the Ganaraska Wolves and will play fast ball with the Bowmanville Badgers this spring. Amanda loves both sports, but is most competitive competitive in the volleyball at this lime. The fastball is a new sport which has just been added to the Olympic games. She also enjoys three-pilch for fun in the summer. Amanda herself believes that her leadership skills lie in the fact that part of her role on the team is that of spirit lifter. She helps keep the team up and this helps to keep the team working together. Humour is a great tension reliever. Amanda has been lucky to have supportive parents. They have taught her that if you are confident, you can do anything. anything. Along with her busy sports and academic schedule, Amanda also balances a part- time job. She pumps gas at the Esso on 401 and crams her homework into her spare so that everything will get done. Amanda's advice to younger athletes is to keep all their options open, to dip into anything that sparks their interest, to not be afraid to try new things. The tournament was open to anyone in the community, community, and the 70 players ranged from ages 15 to 65. There were two pools in the tournament , made up of five teams each. The final match was decided decided in only two games. The second second place team was made up of eight former students of D.C.H.S. The gold medal team, "Team Kirkland", consisted of six players, most of whom are police officers. The team played very strong throughout the tournament and deserved their first place standing. Co-ordinated by Bernice Embree, phys.ed teacher of D.C.H.S., the tournament raised $700.00 for new sports equipment for the school.
