The Ministry of Natural Resources will delay the opening of fishing for one week on a small section of the Ganaraska River in Port Hope to protect spawning rainbow trout. "Our district office has discussed the importance of this special closure of fishing fishing on a small section of the Ganaraska River with officials officials from the town of Port Hope and with local angling interests," said Les Selby, supervisor for the Peterborough District's Northumberland-Hastings Area. "All agree with the need for this temporary measure in order to protect rainbow trout during spawning." spawning." The problem is that cold weather conditions this year have delayed the passage of thousands of rainbow trout, that haven't spawned yet, through the fishway at the Corbett Dam. Fishing is not allowed at any time in an area from the Corbett Dam to 40 metres downstream from the dam. The Ministry of Natural Resources will extend the closure to all fishing in this 40 metre section of river below the Corbett Dam by an extra 100 metres to the Jocelyn Street Bridge. Fishing will not be allowed in this 100 metre section from April 26 to May 3, 1997. Rainbow trout fishing on the Ganaraska River outside the area between the Corbett Dam and the Joceyln Street Bridge will open as usual on Saturday, April 26.
