She noted that about 2(X) students took part in the event which included all students up to the OAC level. She is happy with winning, not just because of the trip, but because her project helped prove a point. It showed that a mixture of soil and paper pellets will help retain moisture which will enable farm crops to grow more effectively during hot spells. cled paper on our farm." In fact, her family has been supplementing supplementing their soil with die paper pellets for five years now. "The recycled paper soaks up the water," she said. She added this is good for the soil, when there isn't a lot of rain. Katie observed that "we have hard, clay-based soil on the farm. In the hot months, the soil would crack." With the paper pellets, there is a distinct difference now. "My project proved a point, that recycled paper works as a soil supplement," Katie said. Katie noted she could not have predicted that she would win one of the four all- expenses-paid trips to Regina, even if she had tried. "I didn't think I was going to win." However, her philosophy in life is "to always try to do my best with what happens," says the youngster who admits she's a bit of a science buff. And, what docs she want to do when she grows up? "I have a lot of animals and I try to keep them as healthy as possible," she says. She thinks perhaps she'd like to be a veterinarian. Katie Cartwright Katie noted she had three cookie sheets she worked with for her science project. One had just regular soil in it, one had 50 per cent recycled paper pellets, and the oilier had only 20 per cent recycled paper pellets. She then planted an assortment assortment of seeds (barley, rye, corn, oats, and wheat) into each flat. "That's what most farmers plant -- 1 live on a farm, and that's what we had," Katie explained. After some tending, eight days later, her seeds began to germinate. Once she had allowed sufficient sufficient time for germination, she measured the percentages of germination in the soil and the supplemented soils. "The 20 per cent had 84 per cent germination, as did the plain soil. The 50-50 had the highest rate at 92 per cent," she recalled. . "Therefore,. the recycled paper does increase the germination germination rate. When I put the two substances together, the seeds did much better." Katie added, "we use recy- Clarington Place Needs More Parking There are so many people going to the Cineplex and Burger King Restaurant in Bowmanville's west end, that the owner of the property would like to add more parking, and get ready for the next phases of development. Bob Marlindale, speaking on behalf of Clarington Place Limited, told a committee of Clarington Council that 15,000 customers are using the area on a weekly basis. He asked the Planning Committee to: • rezone 4.8 acres to a zoning to permit the development of a temporary parking lot north of the Cineplex and restaurants; • rezone 10.26 acres to a zoning to permit the development of 40,000 square feet of recreational and entertainment/commercial uses north of Hwy 2 and the intersection of Green Road; and, • amend policies applying to a 1.24 acre parcel to permit parking for commercial purposes. Marlindale noted that by asking for a temporary parking area, work could begin much sooner. All three requests have been sent back to the planning staff for further processing.
