"We cannot afford to spend $4.8 billion dollars on a tax cut for those who need it least. If the federal government resumed its traditional level of transfers, schools and hospitals would regain the quality of service service that they had in the early 90's." The coalition is advocating advocating an alternative that injects dollars into hospitals and schools and does away with "tax cuts for the rich." The Ontario Federation of Labor echoes the coalition concerns, concerns, calling the Ontario budget budget "obscene" in the face of mass unemployment. OFL president Gord Wilson says the Harris government should scrap the tax cut and quit hacking away at public service service and jobs. "The only reason (he jobkilling jobkilling cuts are happening is to pay for the tax cut. The Ontario budget could be balanced by the year 2000 with absolutely' no spending cuts if it wasn't for the $5 billion tax cut." . Classroom education won't be helped by the latest provincial provincial budget, according to the Ontario School Boards' Association. Association president Lynn Peterson challenged the government's government's claim that it was "investing in classroom education." education." "The province has cut $300 million from students and schools this year," she said. "All public school boards across the province are receiving receiving less provincial funding that they did a year ago." Warren Hale, President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario, sees the budget announcement as a boon to a recovering provincial economy. The lower-than-forecast deficit is a positive sign, lie said, which has enabled the government to introduce initiatives initiatives and not lose sight of its goal to eliminate the deficit. 1-Iale also welcomed the continuation of cuts to personal income tax.
