The Orioles will host the 1997 Major Peewee Ontario Baseball Association "A" Championship. Orioles manager Terry Hubbs, who is also the president president of the entire Orioles organization, is very confident confident heading into the provincials. provincials. "Our chances arc very good. We've done very well in our tournaments this year," Hubbs told The Statesman. In tournament play this year, the major pccwccs arc 10-4. They won two '"B" Championships (Cobourg and Clarington) and in league play they are 14-8. Hubbs says his pitching will be the key as they may have to play seven games over three days. "We have six strong starters and three very reliable reliable relievers, so we'll do well," Hubbs said. "We've been consistent on defence all year and we've kept the runs against down. This year is the first lime that an Orioles' peewee team has made it to the All-Ontario championships. The top 14 "A" major peewee peewee teams from across the province will head to Bowmanvillc August 29-31. In their league playoffs (Eastern Ontario Baseball Association) they went 1-2 beating Peterborough (an "AA" team) and losing to Oshawa and Pickering (both "AAA" teams). Ajax finally won the EOBA playdowns. As of The Statesman's press time, the touranment schedule wasn't finalized due to league playoffs across Ontario not finishing. On Saturday morning, the team began with a convincing 6- 0 romp over East Gwillimbury. Scoring for the 86'ers were Kyle Myschowoda, Brandon Kane, Trevor Delpippo (2), Ryan Fowler and Justin Andrews. In game two, Darlington would play a very determined team from St. Catharines. A goal by Devon Potter from the penalty penalty spot would be the difference in the game with the team earning earning a 1-0 win. In our final game of the day, the 86'ers would lose a 2-0 decision decision to Ajax. It was determined that the Mason Windows team would advance to the quarter finals. Darlington would face Group C winners Whitby. With less than ten minutes remaining, the referee referee rewarded Darlington with a penalty shot when Trevor Delpippo was dragged down inside the penalty area by a Whitby defender. From the spot, Devon Potter would easily beat the Whitby keeper. This goal would advance the 86'ers to the semi-final game with West Rouge. With time running down, the 86'ers used a brilliant series of passing plays to move deep into the West Rouge penalty area. A pass to an unmarked Trevor Delpippo who then released a scorching shot past the shocked West Rouge keeper for the lone goal of the match. This result was the largest upset in the Under-11 division, allowing our team to advance to the "A" Championship, with the Wexford Terriors. Darlington would enter this match knowing that Wexford is the number one ranked team in the Province. Unfortunately for the 86'ers Wexford would take advantage of one of their few opportunities to take a one goal lead at half time. Two more unanswered goals by the Terriors during the second half would give Wexford the Kitchener Championship. One player who deserves a special mention from this strong team effort is goal keeper Steve Mills who allowed five goals in six matches, while earning four shutouts, and was a major factor in the team's success. Returning to league action Tuesday evening, the Mason Windows squad travelled to Scarborough, where they continued continued their strong team play to earn a convincing 5-0 win over the home side. Behind the shutout goal keeping of Steve Mills, Darlington would collect goals from Jeff Bouma (2), Trevor Delpippo, Brad Griffin, and Rene Cartier. Another strong team effort that allowed the team to maintain its hold on first place in the C.S.L. cast division.
