Yl'Sâl ' p t by Laura J. Richards Staff Writer Original. That's how Seedling's Charm, a five-member band from Bowmanville, wants to sell itself. Ashley Getz, Pete Carmichael, Steve Hamilton, Jay Dubeau and Paul Rademacher will be among the many performers participating at this year's Rising Star competition competition held at the Canadian National Exhibition today. Getz told The Statesman she is looking forward to both competitions in which she will be participating -- solo and group. She has been taking vocal lessons from Lorn a Brain of Courtice and, Getz says, "I have a four-octave range." She credits Brain in helping her obtain her singing goals. "She's a phenomenal teacher." Taking singing lessons since she was 12 years old, Getz is getting ready to take the Canadian music scene by storm...she hopes. "Lorna pushes me,", Getz said. She added that she has been humming music since before she learned how to talk. "I love music. I like to be drawn into songs and relate them to my life," she explained. Getz isn't just into modern music, but also classical. "I love classical music. I'm in the junior band at Bowmanville High School and loved it this year." The one thing that keeps her going musically is "having an effect on someone. It gives me drive." She has been a member of Seedling's Charm, since late spring and Getz says her future is somewhat tied to their future at this time. "We have the same goal -- we want to be signed and we want to be famous," she said. Pete Carmichael remarked that none of the band members could be described as "amateurs." "amateurs." "We're not beginners with our instruments and we try to avoid the clichés," Carmichael stated. "In rock music these days, cliché melodies are not selling albums. If you're not playing original music, you're not affecting anyone. "People want to dance again. Lately, rock and roll has come to a bit of a lull. No one is moving," Carmichael said. One of the areas the band would like to eventually delve into is recording an entire album on a computer. Times to bo announced. band members are satisfied with a cassette recently produced produced after 10 hours in the Haggerty ' Studios of Peterborough. "It took six to record the songs and lour hours to mix," Getz explained. Not bad for a band that has only been together since the spring. The band's sound is not what they would categorize into any particular pigeon-hole. There's a little bit electronic, electronic, rhythm, jazz, and a whole lot of life in Seedling's Charm. If you can't make it to the CNE today, Wednesday, Aug. 20, to listen to them at the Rising Star competition,- or if you can't hear Getz tomorrow, Thursday, Aug. 21, you. may be able to catch them at local gigs.
