Under-13 Soccer Team Records Win Over Whitby The Bowmanville Eagles Jr. A hockey club is off to a 1 - 1-1 start to their exhibition schedule. In their pre-season opener against the Cobourg Cougars, the Eagles had to settle for a 6-6 tie. Ryan Latimer led the offense with a pair of goals, with singles going to Ryan Winning, Mark Vincent, Ryan Jackman, and Steve Ewles. The next night in Streelsville, the Eagles were defeated 5-2. Mike Nason and Brett Pakosta scored a goal apiece in the loss. Playing their third game in three nights, the Eagles recorded their first victory, pounding Stouffville 7-2. Kory Dumas and Shane Norton scored two goals each, with single tallies to Jay Cannings, Ryan Latimer, and Mike Davies. The hockey club will host their first exhibition game of the season on Tuesday, September 2, against Lindsay. They will also host Cobourg on Thursday, September 4. Both games will begin at 8:30 p.m. On Saturday, September 6, the Eagles will entertain Streetsville in a matinee affair at 2:30 p.m. All home games will be played at the Recreation Complex. The Under-13 girls played a strong game, beating Whitby Iroquois for the second time this season. While Darlington started slow, pinned in their half for the first 20 minutes, they managed to turn the play around and scored before the half-time whistle. The second half belonged entirely to Darlington, who found their momentum and flew with it leaving Whitby in their dust. Powerhouse Caoimhe O'Donnell came away with a hattrick. Alena Shah, Kelly Goddard and Monica Janssen utilized good ball control skills, while goalie' Casine Barrett made some incredible saves keeping Whitby off the scoreboard. The Darlington Soccer Club's under-13 girls ("Reactors") came away from this weekend's tournament holding their heads high after a solid performance. While they had to play 'up' one year against teams in the under-14 category, the Reactors .managed .managed to outplay, most of their competitors. Their first game, the only one they lost, was against North Bay where it was a 0-0 game until the final few minutes minutes when North Bay slid in two goals. The Reactors next game against East York was an easy victory for them with dynamo Caoimhe O'Donnell tucking away three goals, while Miki Orme's superb goaltending kept East York off the scoresheet. The third game saw the Reactors outmanoeuvring outmanoeuvring Whitby's U-13 team. Particularly in the first half when Tanya Zdravkovski, capitalizing capitalizing on a corner-kick, crossed a high ball in front of the net with teammate Ashley Siciliano heading it in the net for a clever finish. Whitby rallied rallied around in the final minutes scoring a goal and bringing the game to a 1-1 draw. The Reactors final game pitted them against Whitby's under- 14 team (who would later take the trophy) for a challenging and exciting game. While the Reactors couldn't scoop up a goal, they made sure that Whitby couldn't either. The strength of the defence, especially especially from Sarah Little and Monika Janssen, coupled with a strong presence in the Reactors mid-field, kept Whitby off the scoreboard (a feat no other team had accomplished accomplished in the tournament). Whitby was awarded two penalty kicks that Miki Orme's daring saves managed to quash. The Reactors were ' happy to close With a 0-0 game against the favoured team. While the Reactors were one point shy of making it to the finals, they were nonetheless nonetheless pleased with their accomplishments, accomplishments, particularly against teams from an older age bracket bracket from veteran clubs. The 16 team members are: Miki Orme, Lisa Pinheiro, Kristen Ryan, Ashley Siciliano, Katie Gerrits, Melissa McCarthy, Tanya Zdravkovski, Monika Janssen, Casine Barrett, Caoimhe O'Donnell, Alena Shah, Lauren Alexander, Sonia Celiberti, Sarah Little, Kelly Goddard, Sharon Cook.
