GM delivered a total of 37,090 new vehicles, vehicles, a jump of 25.5% over the 29,546 vehicles delivered delivered in the same month last year. Car sales totalled 20,231 units, an increase of 16.6% over Setpcmbcr 1996, and truck sales soared 38.2% to 16,859 units. Dick Conlin, General Motors of Canada's vice president of marketing said, "This is just further recognition of GM's brand and value pricing strategy. This time of year is very competitive in this industry industry and results like these confirm that GM has found the formula that buyers are looking for". Conlin added, "The end of September also represents the end of the model year and we are especially pleased to report that GM was #1 in light duty truck sales in Canada. GM sold 185,914 light-duty trucks in the 1997 model year, an increase of 19.0% over the 156,173 units sold in the 1996 model year. This is a hotly contested contested market and GM beat pur closest competitor by over 1,200 trucks." Provincial Seat Belt Campaign October 4-18,1997 Saturday, October 4th, marked the beginning of the Provincial Seat Belt Campaign. During this two week period, police officers throughout Ontario will enforce the wearing of seat belts with zero tolerance tolerance for offenders. Special emphasis will be on the safety of children children in motor vehicles and the proper use of child restraint seats. Failure to wear a proper proper seat belt or ensuring passengers under the age of 16 years of age are properly secured, carry . fines of $105.00 as well as two Demerit Points on the driver's licence. In Durham Region last year there were 8,080 motor vehicle collisions reported resulting in 2,727 injuries and 25 fatalities. Police are asking the pubic to work together and try to reduce that number with the help of properly used seat belts and child restraints. Buckle up for safety's sake. Shooting At Pickering Dance At 12:43 a.m. on Sunday, October 5th, 1997 Durham Regional Police and ambulance were called to a multiple shooting shooting at the Robin Hood Inn, located at 1999, Altona Road in Pickering. Upon arrival, police located two victims, a 17- year-old Scarborough female found inside the dance hall with a single gunshot wound to the left . leg and a 19-year-old East York man who was found outside, with a single gunshot gunshot wound to the right leg. Both of these victims were transported to Ajax and Pickering Hospital by ambulance. Approximately 500 people arc believed to have been at the dance. Police were later advised two more victims had made their way to Scarborough Centennial Hospital. A fifth victim, with a gunshot wound to the right leg and foot also attended Scarborough Centennial Hospital after police arrival. At 1:00 p.m. a sixth victim, who had suffered a minor flesh wound to her left foot from a bullet, attended 19 Division in Pickering. None of the victims' wounds is life-threatening and all were treated and released.
