Kelly Burke Seeking Ward Two Council Post My name is Kelly Burke and I would like to publicly declare my candidacy for Municipal Councillor of Ward 2, Clarington. I have been a resident of Ward 2 since 1989 and would welcome tile-opportunity to give back a little of what the community has given to me. My working life includes: gas station attendant, electronics electronics technician, small business business management and operations, operations, and assisting provincial charities and non-profit community community organizations in their fund-raising endeavours. I have a keen interest in politics and I've been actively involved at both the provincial and federal levels for a number number of years. The knowledge I have gained through those experiences has enabled me to assist individual residents in ^■r resolving their problems with medical, educational and _ . social services. Seatbelt Crack Down Results so far in a two-week seatbelt blitz across Durham show residents arc still not buckling up. On Saturday, October 4lh, the first day of "Operation Impact," volunteers with the Durham Regional Police Service conducted a traffic study at several locations across the Region to get an idea how many drivers continue to flout provincial seatbelt laws. Of a total of 12,140 vehicles counted, over 1,500 motorists were risking serious injury or even death by not buckling up. The fine for not wearing a scat- belt is $90. Five communities in Durham arc being targeted. The worst compliance rate was in Pickering where only 83.4% of drivers were wearing seatbelts. In Clarington the compliance compliance rate was 89.3 percent. The Durham Regional Police have vowed to take a zero tolerance approach over the duration of their two-xvcck enforcement campaign. Officers will especially be on the lookout for adults who do not ensure their passengers under age 16 arc properly secured in restraint systems.
