Over the past week, I have had over 100 telephone calls from teachers. I have also had a few calls from students and parents. As I spoke with the demonstrators, I felt very anxious. As I looked out, I saw teachers whom I know as friends, teachers who taught our five children children and young teachers with a worried expression on their young faces. Out of respect for the important role of the teachers, I spoke with and listened to the demonstrators. demonstrators. I heard them say how they have no choice and questions like, how can wc improve education and take out a billion dollars? With a background of chants, "we won't back down", our conversation was not very productive. The teachers were angry and they really didn't want to hear anything I had to say. There is so much misinformation misinformation and controversy controversy around this legislation legislation that it is difficult to have a productive conversation. conversation. As a member of the government, I do not believe that this exercise is about removing money from the classroom. I have I do not believe that this exercise is about remov- inq money from the classroom not seen any policy of our government with a target amount of dollars. There has been plenty of talk about the length of in class teaching time. From what I hear in my riding, a secondary secondary teacher has the equivalent of three 75 minute periods (3 hours and 45 min.) plus one preparation period of 75 minutes per day. I understand understand that half of this spare is often called on to relieve other teachers. This is a total of five hours. Many teachers and students are involved in extra curricular curricular activities as well as plenty of marking and home work. The length of the secondary school year is another issue. Currently, the year starts after Labour Day, usually a couple of weeks for exams before Christmas, a couple of weeks off at Christmas, March Break, another two week exam period, an Easter break, classes finish in late may or early June with the exams in mid June. I know of no other job where you get two months off in your first year of employment. I recognize recognize that during the summer, many teachers take summer courses to upgrade their qualifications. qualifications. Both parties must continue continue to negotiate. Nothing will be accomplished by walking away and turning our backs on our children. Eventually, both sides must sit down and examine examine every option to eliminate eliminate any waste, improve quality and make the whole system more accountable to students, teachers, parents and taxpayers. taxpayers. I have the highest respect for teachers and am very sympathetic to the current level of anxiety. I am hopeful that the discussions discussions this week will be productive and wc can focus on the students in our classrooms. The Select Committee on Ontario Hydro Nuclear Affairs has met a couple of times. As a member of this committee, I have encouraged encouraged the members to conduct conduct tours and have public meetings at both Pickering and Darlington, as well as the Bruce stations. These meetings will be open to the public and will be scheduled in late October, The meetings will he advertised.
