Hospital Foundation Donates i $8,000 to Defibrillator Program: Memorial Hospital Foundation, Bowmanville has pledged its support to the fund-raising campaign to purchase defibrillators for the Municipality of Clarington. The Foundation will donate $8,000 towards the cost of one of the machines. "We support this program program because wc know that early intervention by defibrillation is one of the best ways to improve the chance of survival when someone has a heart attack outside of a hospital," explains Anna Strike, President of the Hospital Foundation. "If emergency personnel can use one of these defibrillators sooner, there's a greater chance of saving a life and later, shortening the length of stay in hospital". Defibrillators are used to deliver an electric shock when the heart stops and needs a jump start to continue continue functioning effectively. effectively. "This is an ideal example example of cooperation between the fire depart ment and our hospital. This program will benefit our entire community," site says. Gordon Weir, Clarington Fire Captain echoes those comments. "Wc believe that the Clarington Fire Department Defibrillation Program is an absolute necessity for Clarington. Wc arc determined to provide provide the very best in emergency emergency response to our community". In fact, says Mr. Weir, approximately 40 per cent of the fire department's calls arc medical ones. Firefighters arc "ideally suited" to have defibrillators defibrillators since they arc often first on the scene of an accident." Up to now, when firefighters firefighters arrive at the scene of a heart attack victim, they are trained to do patient assessment, gather medical history, and prol- vidc oxygen therapy and eardio-pulmonary rcsusci-j talion when necessary.: Hospitals, including; Memorial Hospital, arej equipped with dcfihrilia-j tors.
