All arc welcome, first time, he finally admitted admitted that while he lived in Bowmanvillc, lie wrote a weekly column in The Canadian Statesman under the pen name of "Peter Jones". Considering the fact that Peter Jones, a First Nations Christian is credited with holding the first Methodist meeting in our area, in 1827, it seemed preordained preordained that one hundred and seventy years later, Reverend Ed Schamcrhorn/a.k.a. Peter Jones should be chosen to bring a message to us. A 125th anniversary' banner, banner, designed .by Audrey Gill-Grantham and created by Ruth Gcddcs and Helen Soutter was dedicated by our minister, Reverend Ann Foster. The banner depicts how our church and community community have evolved over the past 125 years. A second banner, twenty feet long, created by Rick Clark was displayed outside the church as a welcome to our guests. On this banner, Rick depicted our church as it had appeared earlier this century. After the church service, everyone was invited to a time of fellowship in our C.E. centre. Edna Laird who had retired in 1986 after 52 years as our organist was chosen to cut our anniversary anniversary cake. This special cake was made and decorated by Kate Snowden. Like the five loaves and two fishes, there was still lots of cake left alter sharing it with our guests. Pictures and memorabilia memorabilia dealing with 125 years of history were displayed in the C.E. centre. Of special interest was a quilt purchased purchased in 1918 at a church auction to raise funds for the war (WWI). The quill currently currently owned by Sam Van Camp, was bought by his grandfather at this auction for his daughter (Sam's mother), Edna Van Camp. Hundreds of people in the community had paid 15 cents to have their name embroidered on the quilt. Seventy-nine years later, only three of the people whose names appear on the quilt arc alive today. When Peter Jones arrived in January 1827, he came to the property of Michael Crydcrman, great- great grandfather of our 125th anniversary chairman, chairman, Jim Crydcrman. In addition to the Crydcrmans, descendants of the Foleys, Snowdens and Van Camps of 1872 arc part of our current current church family. Earlier events held to help celebrate this anniversary anniversary and to help raise funds for a new organ were a men's dinner in Febmary and an Open House in May which included an auction and yard sale. These activities, activities, in addition to the generosity generosity of our parishioners allowed us to purchase a new organ and it was dedicated dedicated on June 1, 1997. This new instrument has been put through its paces by our talented talented organist, Terry Head. The final event of this special year is a Christmas concert, presented by our choir and organist on Sunday evening, December 7, 1997 at 7 p.m. In addition, addition, a bell choir from Scarborough will perform. Tickets for that event can be purchased at the door, $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and children. All are invited.
