"Children arc our most important resource," says Judy Murray, Public Health Nurse Manager, administrator administrator of the Healthy Babies, Healthy Children initiative. "We have developed developed a draft program for the Region, but we need to know what the community thinks before we go any further." Families with few social supports and families with premature or low birth weight babies may have concerns about whether their child is developing normally. "Parents may not know where to look, and arc often surprised to learn about resources that were there all along that could have helped them sooner. Healthy Babies, Healthy. Children wants to address that problem," says Murray. If you would like to share your ideas, please call Judy Murray at (905) 683-4660 ext. 230. United Way Says 'Thanks A Million" To General Motors The United Way said "Thanks A Million" to General Motors and its employees with a special award last week. The award is just one of 22 given out this year across Canada. Accepting the award are Dave Broadbent (right) Secretary Treasurer of the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) Local 222; GM General Manager Maureen Kempston Darkes; and CAW Local 222 President Mike Shields. Last year, General Motors donated over $1.2 million to the United Way of Oshawa Whitby and Clarington. Regional Chair Stepping Down From page 1 last night from area mayors wanting me to consider it, so 1 am going to put my name forward," he said. Howard Hall lost the Scugog mayoralty mayoralty race to Doug Moffat in the November 10th municipal election. Hall thinks he's "fairly well-liked" by most of the members of the incoming council. One of the areas that he would want to concentrate on, if he receives the nod from the councillors, is "to heal the rifts" and to get rid of the north/south rivalry on regional council. He added that lie has the support of his family to take on this task, and "I've got the enthusiasm." Other names being tossed about arc former regional councillor John Aker, who did not run for re-election in Oshawa, and Pickering Mayor Wayne Arthurs. Mayor Arthurs says, "I will be making a decision in the next couple of days-by Friday. "I was asked after Jim stepped down yesterday, and have had a number of phone calls" from councillors interested in nominating him, the Pickering Mayor said. He noted that two of the considerations in making his decision will be his family and the fact that he has already been elected to the position of Pickering Mayor. He says he "was given a clear mandate on Monday - election day," to continue to serve as mayor. Mayor Arthurs added he has nine years' experience on regional council, has been involved in many levels of economic development for the region, and with the GTA Marketing Alliance. "I am a strong team member," he said. Clarington Mayor Diane l-lamre quickly squelched speculation that she might seek the post. She says she's backing Scugog Mayor Howard Hall rather than tackling the job herself. "I'm supporting Howard. I've been asked, but 1 won't be seeking the position as I have made my commitment to the municipality," she said. l-Iamre says Hall is a key team member with the 11 rural mayors' group, enjoys working with his constituents, constituents, loves his job, and "cares about the entire region." Having made no enemies while he was the mayor of the northern township, she says Hall "treats people fairly fairly and has the respect of regional councillors. "I believe he's our only choice, and is the only way the rural municipalities will have a voice at the table," Mayor l-Iamre said. Durham Regional Councillors will be sworn into office on Wednesday, Dee. 3. Their first order of business will be to elect a new chair. The new regional chairman chairman will preside over the 28-member Regional Council whose representatives representatives come from all eight municipalities in Durham. The job has a salary of $65,000 per year. The Clarington/Courtice Independent's ACCOUNTANCY HOBB BAKKER BERGIN HILL Chartered Accountants Peter A. Hobb, C.A. WilmarJ. Bakker, C.A. Ian F.
