Grant r.p.t. A Case of Left Knee Pain QUESTION: Telma, I have left knee pain. Could you tell me your approach to the evaluation and treatment treatment of knee pain? I will illustrate my approach to evaluation and treatment with the following case study. My patient came in with left knee pain secondary to knee problems problems from his high school days and he reported that his knee pain was aggravated aggravated by running and skating. When I examined his knee, the pain was on the Inner aspect of the knee joint. It was localized to around the joint line and around the knee cap or patella. We found that on examination, his hamstrings hamstrings were tight and his knee had good joint mobility, mobility, but he had a lot of tenderness tenderness on the inside of the knee joint. I did a whole body evaluation evaluation and found that his head was shifted right on his neck. This predisposed his body weight to fall over his right leg, flattening the right arch of the foot. Hence, there was a twist put on the left lower leg and a considerable strain on the knee because the left lower leg now has to twist Internally In order to compensate 1er the body Toeing tilled to the right. Ifloj' 1 I did a trial treatment that day with electrical acupuncture acupuncture to his right jaw, his left ankle and his left hamstring insertion. We checked for active movements movements pre and post treatment. treatment. The active movement movement that we did was hip mobility, back mobility and neck mobility. All of these Improved post treatment. The patient was also taught stretches and strengthening as part of his rehab program. Interestingly enough, his right arch reformed, It has noticeably improved and was not as flat Immediately after the treatment. The purpose of evaluation evaluation is to find out where movement in the patient's body is restricted. The lack of movement contributes to other joints being subject to more strain and It Is these joints and muscles that end up presenting symptoms. In evaluation we are trying trying to find the contributing factors to the patient's symptoms, so that treatment treatment can be used more to treat causes, rather than to merely treat the symptoms. Their regular season record now stands at 13-3- 2. by Brad Kelly Staff Writer There is a very good chance that Bowmanvilie Eagle rookie defenceman Tyler Cook will be wearing wearing the colors of his hometown hometown club for only one season. Not because he is unhappy with his playing time or treatment. But rather, lie is pegged to move on to a higher level. And that may come as early as next season. At only 15 years of age, Cook has caught the eye of a number of scouts. They arc predicting the Bowmanvilie resident will be a high selection next spring at the Ontario Hockey League draft. "He has great potential to be a first round draft pick. He has so much upside potential it's unbelievable," unbelievable," said General Manager Mike Laing of his prized rearguard. Because of his age, Cook would have to be selected in the first three rounds by an OHL club. That almost seems a certainly, certainly, as he has continued to improve this season. With the Newmarket Showcase tournament just ahead at Christmas, his stock could rise even higher. higher. "We'll sec what hap pens at the draft," says Cook when asked about his future on the ice, adding that he doesn't have any preference to play for a team. The grade 10 student at Trinity College School in Port Hope played last sea-. son in the MTHL for the North York Bantams, after having played in the Central Ontario Wolves 'AAA' organization. Offered an invitation to the Eagles' rookie camp, lie accepted with no expectations. expectations. "1 wasn't sure if I'd make the team when I came out," lie said after a recent game. "I thought maybe I had a chance, but I could still go back and play with the North York bantams." From day one of the camp, lie impressed those perched high in the stands evaluating the talent. "I liked him from the start," said Laing, proving first impressions can go a long way. "He handled himself very well." The scouting report suggests that for such a young age he shows a lot of poise on the ice, rarely makes a bad play, is a good skater, and doesn't panic. With some work on his upper body strength, his potential is unlimited. "He has continually improved since day one," Laing raved. "Most games, lie is our best defenceman." That's high praise for a youngster who, on most nights, is competing against players four and five years older.
