PAGE 4 THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, February 16,2000 Catholic students face a slow trip on information highway BY JENNIFER STONE Staff Writer Students in Bowmanville and Cobourg arc finding the trip on the information superhighway superhighway a little slow going, say Catholic school board officials. officials. While schools in Peterborough Peterborough arc connecting to the the Internet at 500 kilobytes per second, schools in Clar- ington and Cobourg have a much slower 128 kilobyte per second connection. The only way to solve the problem is for utility companies such as Bell Canada to increase the available bandwidth, trustees were told Tuesday. But that's unlikely in the immediate future because Bowmanville and Cobourg "have very little industry and as such very little demand for increased bandwidth," said Marie Howran, manager of 'computer services with the Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland and Clar- ington District Catholic School Board. "The problem in those two areas is one of resource," she explained. Tire board began bringing schools on-line in 1997, piloting piloting a Wide Area Network at St. Mary's Secondary in Cobourg and St. Stephen's Secondary in Bowmanville, as well as in schools in Peterborough, Peterborough, Campbell ford and Lindsay. Tbc network connected connected the schools to each other and to the board's office in Peterborough. Now, all schools in the board are on-line, and training training for staff has been completed completed at all schools except Notre Dame Elementary in Cobourg. The training has been scheduled for this month. But schools in Bowmanville Bowmanville and Cobourg arc finding the connection to the Net isn't as efficient as it could be. For example, at St. Stephen's, where there arc over 300 computers, "we can really only get 35 computers simultaneously accessing the Internet effectively at one time," says Mrs. Howran. Any more than that, and it can take "sometimes three to four minutes to change (web) pages." Though the board will continue to lobby utility companies companies to increase bandwidth to the two mens, they still must find a way to deal with the problem in the interim, said Joanne Hough, superintendent superintendent of schools. One idea is to ensure. only a limited number of students arc accessing accessing tbc Net at any one time, she said. So why arc some people wealthy and others arc not? Luck perhaps, but mainly because the wealthy chose to invest differently than most Canadians. To become "rich" you must make use of other people's money, in other words borrow to invest. Opportunities do exist to do just that. You can literally double your investment assets legitimately with the assistance of a financial institution. An example follows: You have $30,000 currently invested in your RRSP. You apply to borrow $30,000 (the equivalent to the value of your RRSP) and make 'interest only payments'. At any point in the future you repay the principal amount of money you borrowed, bill for the time being you only make interest payments (you are not repaying any of the principal). These payments are lax deductible - exactly the same as if you contributed the same amount of money to your RRSP. , The above example allows you to get more money invested and working for you today. These loans arc available through Regal Capital Planners Ltd. The loans are fully underwritten and there is a potential for a margin call should the market value of the loan drop significantly. Borrowing for investment purposes can magnify the risk as well as the reward of investing. This is a complex investment decision, which must he fully explained and understood - consult a representative for details. Is Ibis investment concept right for you?
