PAGE 18 THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JULY 5,2000 Local singer s perfect for weddings Dan Clancy's album a big hit BY JOHN DUARTE Staff Editor Recording and releasing a compact disc lias as much to do with timing and confidence confidence as it does with talent and money. Dan Clancy was in no hurry to record a solo album. He wanted things to be just right before he headed into the studio. "I never really had the confidence (before now)," Clancy says. "Last year, I started using my own name as a band and I was just getting getting comfortable with it." That may sound strange, especially since Clancy has been the front man for one of Canada's best known bands, Lighthouse, since 1992 and credits Lighthouse's Skip Prokop as one of his main backers. "Being part of Lighthouse has been great," says the Whitby-based singer. "I had no problem riding those coattails coattails for a while." Clancy says a year ago, "everything began to fall in place." Lighthouse group members were supportive of his efforts as was former Triumph Triumph member Rik Emmett. "Rik has become a really influential friend," he says. "He has offered guidance and advice and I've really learned from him on things like e- commerce and marketing." For his first solo recording, recording, Clancy went back to his roots. "I started in music playing at weddings," Clancy says. "Wedding music has been a large part of my career." 'The Wedding Album' features 11 tracks, "the first eight are ones' I still do at people's weddings." There is also a remake of an Eagles song and the popular 'Daddy's Little Girl'. "I wanted to do something that really challenged me," Clancy says. "Music that I perform at weddings challenges challenges me as a vocalist." Clancy says he really enjoyed enjoyed the experience of working on his first solo recording. He credits the positive positive experience to the fact "I surrounded myself with a talented talented group of people that made it work. People like Yves Faubert." Injected with new passion for music and with the first solo project under his belt, Clancy says he is prepared and, in fact, already working on a new recording. Titled 'The Resolution' after the DAN CLANCY Has released The Wedding Album ship his ancestors sailed from Ireland to Canada in 1825, the new recording will feature feature Celtic music. "This album is already in pre-production," he says. "Even though Celtic music is fashionable right now, I'm doing it for more personal reasons." Clancy says 'The Wedding Wedding Album' is the first in a series of projects, each with a very distinct theme. The Ccltic-sounds of 'The Reso-. lution' will likely be followed by a more adult contemporary contemporary recording. "It may cost more money doing it this way," says Clancy, Clancy, "but if you record a hodgepodge of musical styles for. one record, it can sound a bit loo fragmented." 'The Wedding Album' is now available at Sam's, at the Oshawa Centre, and Clancy says he will be "hitting all the bridal shows." He also reports reports a Dan Clancy Web site is also in the works. Buying the album will, also help .a.. good cause, with $1 from the sale of every CD going to the trauma ward at the Toronto General Hospital. Of course, you can catch the Dan Clancy Band live weekly at Mickey Finn's Sports Cafe in Oshawa and he will performing with Lighthouse at various concerts, concerts, including a show in Hamilton for Prince Albert of Monaco along with Chris de Burgh to raise money for international international charity DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education).
