•I PAGE A8THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, OCTOBER 25,2000 Word on the street: Mayoralty race close call BY JACQU1E McINNES Staff Writer CLARINGTON - Clarington residents residents know their own minds and they were only too happy to take time out from Applefest recently to share their thoughts on the municipal election race. Of those interviewed by This Week, a healthy majority have already made up their minds who they'll vote for and most have an idea of at least some of the issues in this election. With Mayor Diane Hamre retiring this year, there are four candidates for the top job: John Mutton, currently the Regional Ward 3 and 4 councillor; Mary Novak, currently Regional Ward 1 and 2 councillor; Bill Stockwell, Clarington's former CAO and a former Etobicoke and Metro Toronto council- lor and Troy Young, currently the local Ward 3 councillor. Bryan and Sylvia Burtis haven't decided decided where they'll mark the X on their ballots but they certainly know what they'll be looking for. "Recreation centres and transportation," transportation," are issues says Mrs. Burtis. "The traffic on Liberty Street and Scugog Street is terrible." Mr. Burtis, an Ontario Power Generation Generation employee, wants to elect someone supportive of the nuclear industry. industry. He also wants to see the candidates' candidates' position on the proposed ITER fusion research facility. Beyond business concerns, Mr. Burtis says he is concerned about the possibility of an expansion of the Newtonville-area dump. "In Newtonville there was a proposal proposal to expand the dump. The current council has said it wants no dump in the region." He wants to ensure the new councillors share the same philosophy. philosophy. For Donna Griffin of Enfield, some political issues are small but hit close to home. Residents there need a line painted up the middle of the road so they can see which side of the road they're driving on in the fog which passes over the area, she says. MARY SKENE Undecided who she 'll vote for. 'Oshawa, Whitby and Bowmanville should keep out of the GTA.' DONNA GRIFFIN 'Em voting for Troy Young.' On a larger issue, she wants a mayor who will take a strong stand on the storage of paper sludge which residents residents in the area fear could be contaminating contaminating groundwater and damaging the environment. "I'm voting for Troy Young," she says. "He's been out to all our meetings meetings (on paper sludge). He's been there from the beginning." Like many parents of young sports enthusiasts in the municipality, Luc Albertini of Mitchell's Corners says his primary issue in' this election will be recreation facilities, specifically ice time allocation. He suggests an investigation investigation into the feasibility of having private enterprise build an adult ice rink. "It could be pay-as-you-go. That way the community wouldn't have to pay for it and it would take some pressure pressure off taxpayers," he suggests. As well, he adds, it "may even be worth looking at building a smaller size rink for young kids to use. It might go on to the back of an existing rink and alleviate alleviate the pressure off the bigger rinks." Mr. Albertini said he has been following following the election and plans to vote for Mary Novak. "She talked to us a few times. She's a proponent of looking looking into the ice problem." Don Parsons of Bowmanville has been following the election "a little bit". He says he plans to vote for John Mutton. For him, amalgamation is a concern. "I'd like (the municipalities) to stay as they are. To get amalgamated costs a lot more tax money." Mary Skene is also concerned about amalgamation, especially if it means Clarington would become part of a GTA-wide government. "I would like to stay the way we are. We moved out of Toronto. Toronto Toronto should stay as Toronto and Whitby, Oshawa and Bowmanville should keep out of the GTA." Ms. Skene says she's still undecided on the mayor's race but is "collecting brochures" to help her make up her mind. With amalgamation on the horizon and the other weighty decisions needing needing to be made in this coming term of council, Bruce Winning of Orono says he's counting on the long-time political political experience of Bill Stockwell to get the job done. "Stockwell has the acumen acumen and ability," he says. Like Mr. Burtis, Mr. Winning says he feels the ITER project should be supported by the new mayor. "Not just because it will generate jobs but because the process has to come," he explains, noting unlike the waste from nuclear fission, fusion waste does not last for millions of years. "To me it (ITER) is a win-win situation." LUC ALBERTINI Supports Mary Novak DON PARSONS John Mutton gets his vote BRUCE WINNING '(Bill) Stockwell has the acumen.' Gas companies hate it.
