While the brooms are being brought out for the start of the season at other local curling clubs, the 42- year-old Port Perry club will have to wait until the Boxing Day Bonspiel to see rocks flying out of the hack. A small ammonia leak discovered by icemaker Mike Brodeur earlier this month has necessitated the installation of a new cooling cooling system, which will take a couple of months and cost in the range of $110,000 to pul in place. "Once we saw the pipes, there was no use in trying to fix (the leak)," says Brodeur, who discovered the 194 steel pipes rusting away under the rink. "It was a matter of time before it happened, but things never tend to break down in the off-season." The new cooling system will be brought up to provincial standards, with a calcium chloride brine pumping through non-corrosive non-corrosive polyurethane pipes. "It's much more environmentally environmentally friendly," says Brodeur. "All the new arenas arenas and curling rinks use it." The old system, which used 1,200 pounds of am- Please ELECT Ann Dreslinski Regional Councillor Wards 3 & 4 ANDREW IWANOWSKI/ Statesman photo Perfect practice Lucas Beech of Bowmanville Senior Public School blimps a ball in preparation for a game while teammates Corey Prince (12) and David Norish (22) wait in line. But, since costs cannot be recovered from the government after the fact, the club will have to dip into existing funds and reach out to the community community for the balance. "It's hard to predict these things," says the club's past president Roger Moase. "We knew this was coming. The plant is 42 years old." Moase says a second phase to replace less essential essential equipment will be required required after the curling season, which could cost another $50,000. The club will look into grants to cover those costs. While they wait for the new ice system to be installed, installed, the club's 400 members will not necessar ily be out of action. Other curling clubs, including those in Whitby, Uxbridge and Port Hope, have stepped up and offered any available ice time to the Port Perry leagues. "Curling clubs are a close-knit community," says Brodeur. "Usually when one goes down, we always band together to help eacli other out." Meantime, the Whitby Curling Club, Oshawa Curling Club and Oshawa Golf Club have been running running lcarn-to-curl programs programs as they gear up for the season. All clubs run leagues for men, women, mixed, juniors and seniors.
