A.J. GROEN/ Statesman photo BY JACQU1E MclNNES Staff Writer CLARINGTON - On Nov. 11, 1918, a Canadian soldier climbed a London, England flag pole to claim a Union Jack as a momento in celebration celebration of Armistice Day. When he returned returned to Canada, he brought that small piece of First World War history history with him. As we remember those soldiers this year, visitors to the annual Heritage Heritage Quilt Week in Bowmanville, Nov. 6 to 11, can view that soldier's treasure and those of many other families, incorporated into the hundreds hundreds of quilts, new and old, on display. display. The flag itself is now part of a quilt made by the lady who was given that flag from a worker on her farm, the very same precocious soldier. It will be part of an Armistice display during the Bowmanville event that will include other quilts from that period period and some artifacts from the war, says Diana Rogers, the quilt show coordinator. coordinator. Also at the show, visitors will see a quilt which proves almost a century after that Union Jack flew in London, the art of quilting is still thriving. A 10 X 15 foot quilt compiled of 180 block contributions from quilters across Canada will also be on display at the show. Oshawa resident Sandra Goodman, who takes quilting courses through Bowmanville's Gould's Cards and Gifts, had one of her blocks selected to be part of the quilt, says Ms. Rogers. Once the blocks were selected, "six sections were sent out to six quilting guilds across the country in British Columbia, Ontario, Yellowknife, the North West Territories Territories and Nova Scotia," to be stitched together. Along with the ac tual quilt itself, on loan from its home at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Corporation atrium in Toronto, the show will feature posters of the quilt for purchase. One of the highlights of Heritage Quilt Week will be the announcement of this year's winner of the Quilt Heritage Heritage 2000 Challenge. This year 16 entrants are competing in the category category of "the smaller the better" which challenged participants to create a quilt using up to 2,000 pieces. Already the challenge for 2001 has been announced. Called a "Quil- ter's Square Dance" it will feature the best use of squares, 1/2 squares and 1/4 squares, a minimum of 24 X 24 inches. Although the contest is based in Bowmanville as a tie-in to the annual annual event, the quilts themselves arrive arrive from all over, says Ms. Rogers. One of the challenge quilts arrived from Maine after a summer tourist learned about the contest during a visit to Bowmanville, went home, created a quilt and made a return trip just to deliver it, says Ms. Rogers. Other features this week will include include trunk shows featuring quilts which travel around including one which has just arrived from a visit in Quilt Week in Bowmanville There will be enough to keep you busy as a bee during Heritage Quilt Week. • Quilt appraisals Thursday and Friday until 8:30 p.m. at Gould's Cards and Gifts, 51 King St. E„ Bowmanville • Antique quilt display at the Bowmanville Bowmanville Museum, 37 Silver St„ Bowmanville daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. • The Clarington Municipal Centre Centre features an extensive display of quilts during business hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weekdays. • Trinity United Church, 116 Church St„ features the most extensive extensive display and show including a juror's display, an Armistice display, display, viewer's choice awards, demonstrations, trunk shows, a cross-Canada quill and a merchant market.
