The executive of the Bow- manville/Newcastle Baseball Association Association certainly didn't. Brandon was the recipient of the Kurt Baker Memorial Award, presented presented annually to the player in the peewee division for his or her sportsmanship and dedication to the game of baseball. "We wanted to keep Kurt's memory memory living on and this is one way in which we felt we could," says BNBA vice president Donny Prince of the memorial award. DC fastball team tops in Ontario BY BRIAN McNAIR Staff Writer OSHAWA - Erin Smith may have written the final chapter, but every player player on the Durham College women's fast- ' ball team had a hand in what coach Jim Ncmish called "a stoiybook ending" to the season Saturday. Hosting the Ontario Colleges Athletic Athletic Association championships on a rainy weekend in Oshawa, the Lords wrapped up a record 10th provincial title with a thrilling 2-l victory over North Bay's Canadore College. Smith, the sensational second year player from Stratford,, delivered the go- ahead run with a single in the sixth inning inning and then closed out her 13th win of the season with a hard-earned strikeout in the seventh. With two outs and a runner runner on first, Smith ran the count full and endured a series of foul balls before finally finally getting the whiff to spark a hearty celebration. "Erin gets all the accolades, but all the girls deserve credit," says Nemish, who has guided the Lords to seven provincial titles in his 14 years at the college, including four in the past six years. "The girls really wanted it, especially especially the veterans after (losing in the final) last year." A good-sized crowd of about 250 watched a brilliant pitchers' duel in the final, as Smith faced the lone pitcher to have beaten Durham this OCAA season in Canadore's Martina Granger. Granger held the Lords off the board until the fifth inning, when Kim Phillips hit a line drive into the corner and legged out a home run to tie the game l-l. "That gave us a big boost," Nemish says of the hit from Phillips, who was named player of the game. "Everything we hit (up to that point) was right at them."
