If yoq -can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don't deal in lies, , Cr being hated don't give way to hating, hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise; If you can dream--and not make dreams your master ; If you can. thank -- and not make , thoughts .your aim ; If you can meet ykh Triumph or Disaster , And treat those two imposters- just the same ; If you can bear to hear the truth you've -spoken Twi-stod by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools ; If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch -and toss-, Anri los-e, and. start again at your beginnings beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss ; If you can force y-our heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to- them : "Hold on." If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch, If either foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men -count with you, but none too much ; If you can fill the unforgiving minute minute With sixty 'seconds' worth of distance run, Yours, is the Earth and everything that's in it, And--which is more--you'll be a Man, toy son ! -- Rudyard Kipling. HOT WIRES DISTURB LATE SLEEPERS The enthusiastic angler was relating relating a fishing story to some of his neighbors. "Yes," he said proudly, "I -caught the bjggest fish of my career last- night. It was a -balsa,.-, and it .weighed seven pounds two ounces." His small son, who had remained interested throughout the entire story, now spoke up : "Yes, and -daddy ,was -So kind. He gave it to my (title kitten." Board was -held on Thursday, Feb null' y Ith. in -the library with the chairman, Mr. J, W. Bradley, presiding. presiding. The new (Secretary-Treasurer, (Secretary-Treasurer, Miss Naomi Horrocks, gave her annua! report and this (showed, the library finances to be in good shape and, the circulation of books still double the average small library. During During the year in which there were 341 members, 14,476 books and. 972 magazines magazines were taken out. A. - Butler, Mrs. Ben -Moïse; appointees of the Municipal Council, Mrs. 11, Hancock appointed by Board of Education and M'i-ss Naomi Horrocks, Secretary-Treasured. Secretary-Treasured. The Reeve, Mr. Cecil Carveth, is a member by virtue o-f hi-s office. Miss O. B. Butler was again appointed appointed Librarian. •Somebody hist Friday wrote all of the Toronto papers saying that the Orono Chamber of Commerce are offering a $50.00 bonus for new babies. Between visiting reports and long distance telephone calls from Toronto to substantiate this story, the morning rest of the heads of a number number of some of -out best families was broken by having to get up out of bed to deny the report. But just as everybody everybody had finished denying it some of our best inf ormed citizens were surprised surprised to -learn that the joke was only forty-nine dollars wrong and that the Orono Women's Institute h-av-e been paying a one dollar bonus on new babies for a number of years. It will surprise some to know that there were forty-three deaths and only thirty-five births in the Township Township of Clarke in the year 1936, and that this has been going on for years without enough new settlers coming here to live to take up the difference,; which' accounts for our population here getting loss and less each year. ™"ie Orono Women's Institute are to be -congratulated on their far-seeing wisdom, and i ts really too bad that the Orono Chamber of Commerce cannot afford to pay $50 each for new babies at present, For if Clarke Township is -a fair sample of what is happening in rural Canada, we are all set for a national calamity. It may be that we are suffering from -birth -control or that the race is deteriorating. For the Book of Genesis says, when Abraham was a hundred years old and his wife Sarah was ninety-two, that she gave birth to Isaac. Anyway the Or.o-no Women's Institute, Institute, Hitler and Mussolini can't all be wrong in advocating more new babie* 'and the joke will be on us until until we have a lot more new babies than deaths each year. , • '----------o -- IN MEMORIAM THOMPSON -- In - ever grateful and loving memory of our dear mother, Mary J aim Thompson, who went to her reward February 13th, 1936.'
