Ferrester, Publisher 240,000. Every province showed an increase, starting with Prince Edward Edward Island on the east where there were 600 more cars. There were 37 more in the Yukon. The number of persons to each motor vehicle in 1036 was 8.9 and, as more than two thousand of these were buses, it does hot seem an exaggeration exaggeration to say that the whole population of the Dominion could be taken for a ride at the same hour and nobody need be left at home to watch the kettle kettle boil. From Ontario to the Pacific Coast the ratio of ears to the population is very much stronger than in the East. In Ontario there is one car for every 6.3 persons but in Quebec, it is one in every 16.9. British Columbia is the second province with one in every 7.1 persons, Alberta third with one in 7.9. Prince Edward Island is fourth with one in 8.9, Thursbey, Aug 26, 1937 In the political campaign in Durham Durham we would call the attention of the people by medium of "The Times" that Cecil Mercer and Milton Elliott, candidates chosen for Durham, are both "natives of our immediate neighborhood, neighborhood, both born on farms across the road from one another, little more : than a stone's throw apart and both were pupils of McLean's school. The. Mercer home was the Wm. McLean McLean farm and birth place of Mr. J. S. MièLean of 'Canada . Packers, and the John Elliott farm was later purchased; purchased; by Mr. George Mercer and now since, his retirement to Kendal village is in possession of his son Boy. The Elliott family have been since residents on the farm, then purchased purchased by them at Bowmanville. In this Durham Elliott-- gercer contest the first named was born on lot 6, concession 7, and the latter on lot 7, concession 7, Township, of Clarke. CARS AND TRAILERS The trailer evidently has become a very popular mode of holiday travel for there were 47,000 of them registered registered in Canada last year, which was an increase of more than seven thousand thousand over 1935. These trailers are in great variety, from simple little cart- like affair's to furnished homes on wheels, some quite beautiful,' others not quite so artistic. More than half of them, were registered in Ontario. The number of automobiles is expanding expanding rapidly in Canada. There Was an increase last year of 64,000 and the total registrations number 1,- More Cigarettes Used Canadians this year will smoke more than six billion cigarettes--a new high record--and the federal government will net something like $27,000,000 in excise duty from the consumption of these smokes. The story of the increased .popularity .popularity of cigarettes is an amazing one. A quarter of a century, ago very few women indulged in the weed. In 1911 the total consumption of cigarettes in Canada was 585 million. Today it is more than ten times that figure. During the depression the consumption consumption of cigarettes dwindled, so the government decided to cut the tax from $6 to $4 per thousand, provided provided the trade would pass the reduction reduction in. taxation on to the consumer. Cigarettes costing one cent each were put on the market in place of 20 cigarettes for 25 cents. Smokers soon responded. Many ceased to roll their own and bought the tailormade . variety, notwithstanding the 50 per cent, cut in the tax.
