Matthew 11:2,8. The Lessen in its Setting Time.--Our Lord's words of invita invita hr; a were uttered in December, A.9. 29. The date of the writing of the epistle to the Hebrews cannot be definitely determined. It must be placed before the fall of Jerusalem, probably about 68 A.D, i bice.--Our Lord's words were uttered uttered in Peraea, east of the Jordan lover, opposite Judaea. The place of the writing of the epistle to the Hebrews is disputed. The late Dr. J. Stuart Holden of St. haul's, London., says of Matt. 11: EÏÏ, 29: "This is perhaps the greatest word of the Evangel. It is majesty set to .music for the lightening of overburdened and. fevered lives. It is heaven's heart's ease for healing of sinning and sorrowful men. No .other of all the gracious words which proceeded from his mouth is consecrated consecrated so entirely by the experience of thousands in every age as is this cver-new invitation of the Son of God to the Sons of men. 28. Come unto me. There is love in this invitation, and urgency, and a consciousness of ability to meet the needs of those who will come. Come ye that labor and are heavy laden. 'Come unto Me, and I will give you rest!' All ye that are like over-car- goed boats, whose minds are burdened burdened with anxieties and cares, or with the heavy and lumbering traditions of men, who are nigh to being swamped, living in perpetual fear of sumbission, 'Come unto Me, and I will give you rest.' Rest is that heart harmony with God which qualifies men for life's engagements, engagements, for its ceaseless conflict and conquest, for its fruitful toil, and for its noblest and highest purposes. This is what Christ came to effect in men. This is the object of all His work and the interpretation of all His passion. Invitation to Rest 29. Take my yoke upon you. . . . Christ takes upon Himself the one side of the yoke, and He invites you to come and occupy thé empty place beside Him. He is the meek and lowly one. He has been accustomed to the yoke. This is the divine yokefellow yokefellow of whom you are to learn, moving moving side by side with you, that you may imitate His patient endurance, His meekness and lowliness of spirit. And learn of me. We are to learn of the Lord Jesus first, by studying the portrait of him as revealed in the Gospels, and then by living the Christlike life, as the Spirit of Christ dwells in us, teaching, strengthening, sanctifying and guiding us. For I am meek and lowly in heart, "The word 'meek' carries the idea of mild- Is This Your Birthday ? By A. R. What, is it to be lowly in heart? The lowly- minded mah is down in a humble sphere, where he is content if he can only serve." And ye shall find rest unto your souls. Here is a promise, but there are specific conditions which must be met before the promise can • be fulfilled; we first come to Christ, then we take his yoke upon us, and then we learn of him. When we have clone these three things, we shall no longer be seeking rest. We shall have it. 80. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. "The word rendered rendered 'easy' means agreeable and serviceable. serviceable. If Christ's yoke ever galls the neck, it is because we do not work steadily in it," Rest For Christian Believers 1. Let us fear therefore. "It is because wo know the Father, it is because we are redeemed by the precious precious blood of the Saviour, it is as the children of God and as the saints of Christ that we are to pass our earthly pilgrimage in tear. This is not the fear which dreads condemnation, condemnation, but the fear of those who are saved and whom. Christ has made free. «Lest haply, a promise being left of entering into his rest, any one of you should seem to have come short of it. 2 For indeed we have had good tidings preached unto us, even as also they : but the word of hearing did not profit them, because it was not united by faith with them that heard. 3. For we who have believed believed do enter into that rest. Thomas Thomas Carlyle, in his life of Schiller, speaks of unrest as "the never failing inmate of every human breast." This is true of everyone outside of the Lord Jesus Christ, but in Christ, if the New Testament teaches anything, it teaches this, that, in believing, we are to have peace and joy. Here is one of the deepest, more precious themes of the word of God, something something which cannot be analyzed, but must be entered into by experience. Even as he hath said, As I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into into my rest. These words are taken from Psalm 95: 11, and they refer to God's words to Israel, especially as regards her entrance into the Promised Promised Land. Had Israel fully followed followed the explicit instructions of God in the matter of exterminating enemy enemy peoples, Israel would have had a complete reft, from the exhausting, taxing, rebellious invasions and uprisings uprisings of these pagan peoples. But there is certainly a deeper meaning' here in the matter of rest -- a rest for the souls of the Israelites, a true resting in God. Although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4. For he hath said somewhere of the seventh day on this wise, And God rested on the seventh day from all his works; 5. And in this place again, They shall not enter into my rest. These quotations are from Gen. 2:2 and Psalms 95:11. The rest of God is the expression of the perfect, divine divine complacency in the perfect, divine divine work. A Special Day 6. Seeing therefore it remaineth that some should enter thereinto, and they to whom the good tidings were before preached failed to enter in because of disobedience. 7. He again defineth a certain day, To-day, saying in David so long a time afterward (even as hath been said before), Today if ye shall hear his voice, harden harden not your hearts. 8. For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken afterward of another day, 9. There remaineth therefore a sabbath rest for the people of God. For he that is entered into his rest hath himself also rested from bis works, as God did from his. 11. Let us therefore give diligence to enter into that rest, that no man fall after the same example of disobedience. "The essence of sin is that sin centres centres in self instead of God. We try to help ourselves instead of throwing our burden of sin and care and sorrow sorrow upon the great Sinbearer and the Man of Sorrows, who was acquainted acquainted with grief. Now, when we come to Christ, we abandon all this self-help, and ask Him to be our helper; helper; we abandon all this self-trust and lean on His finished work. We stop laboring to build up our own interests, interests, and we are taken up with the interests of His kingdom.
