En- quiries are being made by the Orono Chamber of Commerce in trying to secure one bult up to the present have not been successful. CONSERVE THE FORESTS (While viewing the scenes shown at the town hall on Thursday evening last where sand was doing so much damage to agricultural land through- out Ontario, we would like to men- tion the fact that in Durham -county some parts are even now nothing but waste ilaind and not fit to grow any- thing but trees -and shrubs. Take even in our own Township of Clarke, in the northern part, sand is Slowly but gradually -creeping along and covering up good soil. The depletion of forests is the cause of floods-, - erosion and also the sand menace. The forests act as a barrier to keep back the sand, they also are preventives for erosion. When it rains the water stays in -the forests and is gradually absorbed by the soil and helps to decay the leaves and other forest vegetation, but as the forests are being cut down the rain lb-eats dbwn on the earth -and causes floods that are detrimental to roads and bridges which cost the country a lot ,,i‘ money to replace. In Manvers Township, in -one place a grader has to be used several times a year -to clear the road of sand iamd this could be prevented if -the council would only build a high board, fence -and plant -a wood lot in the enclosure -so âà to give the young trees a chance to grow, -and -which would stop the -sand from spreading. In New York IState millions of trees are being planted" annually and in other parts of the country mil- lions of acres are -being made into- forests, on land that is practically useless for anything else. Why not the United Counties of Northumberland and Durham buy up some waste land -in the counties and make forests. The trees are all -sup- plied by the government and it would help a. great, deal to -check the sand. While in Prince Edward County last summer, w-e visited the sand batiks there where the -.mo buildings were buried! and shrubs- and bushes covered over. The sand has got such à staft that it will be difficult to check. When a tree is cut down why not replace it with -another -so that there will be always forests to take outre -of this menace.
