Lipton Melody Hour Returns Countless radio listeners warm- ly welcomed the return to the air, a few Sundays ago,, of the very pop- ular “Lipton Melody Hour Musi- cale.†The very fine tenor soloist, who last season was known only as ‘‘Your Lipton Melody Singer†is now identified as John Biddle, a young Canadian who is rapidly gaining recognition as a singer, who has definitely arrived. His singing of both sacred and light operatic numbers has drawn a flood of con- gratulatory letters and requests, and there has been much specula- tion as to his identity. Associated with him on the program are Olga Berezowska, brilliant young Ukran- ian-Cauadian soprano, and the Lip- ton Ensemble under the direction of Simeon Joyce. The program is presented every Sunday at 4:00 o’- clock by Thomas J. Lipton Limited, packers of Lipton’s Tea, and is heard over Stations CBL, Toronto, and CRM, Montreal. Issues Ultimatum Haj Amin Effendi Al Hussein!, Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, has is- sued an ultimatum demanding that Britain abandon her mandate over Palestine in order that a sov- ereign state be created by the Arabs, The Grand Mufti also de- manded that Jewish migration to the Holy Land cease. In exile in Syria, the Grand Mufti intimated that unless his demands were met Arabs would launch a large scale war against the Jews and British. Ottawa Boosts Dams Program •.Gardiner Announces More Pro- jects for Aid of Prairie Farm- ers Facing Shortage of Water REGINA.â€"Extension of the prai- rie farm rehabilitation program of building community dams and dug- outs has been authorized by Hon. J. G. Gardiner, federal minister of agriculture. It now will involve tm expenditure of about $100,000, pro- viding fall work for between 3,500 and 4,000 farmers. 180 Projects Under Way Mr. Gardiner's decision Brought the projects up to 180, largely in Saskatchewan, with 28 scheduled for Alberta’s special areas, and about six for southwestern Mani- toba. The program, which speeds con- struction this year of projects that normally might not. be built until 1939 or even later, is twofold in purpose. First, the community dams and dugouts will be built in areas where water shortage is a definite problem, and second, the construc- tion program will take the form of work and wages project for hard- hit farmers. Train Is Stopped To Assist Deer A fine buck deer was saved hours of suffering when ob- served tangled in a wire fence along the C. N. It. tracks about a half mile east of Sebring- ville, Ont. The animal was so badly mutilated that deputy game wardens had to shoot it. The deer was spotted by F. V. Ken- nard, who had a yard engine out on a test run. The cyigine was stopped and the crew freed the deer by snipping the wires. E, J. Soigner and R. A. Mc- Donald, deputy game wardens were called. Mr, Seigner shot the animal. It was dressed and brought into the Stratford house of ref- uge. 1 Try this on your wife. Our bet is, however, she will like a pres- ent better: Mr. Tirnson came home one evening to find his wife vis- ibly displeased. Wife-â€"“Bo you realize, John, that you have forgotten that this is my anniversary?†Husbandâ€"“Of course, I’ve for- gotten. There really isn’t anything about you to remind me that you’re a day older than you were a year agoâ€"or even ten years ago.†Time flies when you con- sider how recently you bought the children’s shoes which now need new half soles. But it goes on crutches if you think how long it takes to get back that: $10 you lent with the promise that it would be repaid next week. Angry Fatherâ€"“I don't know what to do about your telling un- truths. At last, engineers have perfect- ed a one-burner portable stove with most of the advantages of larger ones. It is the only one- burner stove with so many dis- tinctive advantages. This new stove lights instantly, without preheating, on the “in- stant gas from gasoline†principle. Heat can be easily regulated to high, medium or low. A safety shut-off valve keeps fuel from spilling and eliminates the need of repumping every time the stove is. lighted. An : automatic tip cleaning needle is built in. The “life-time†burner is wind-proof, silent and operates without throwing off fuel odor. It is the same type of bur- ner used on expensive instant gas ranges. An extra large, straight generator is easy to clean and re- place. A triple nickel-plated brass fount is rust-proof, tested for 200 lbs. pressure and is unusually ^safe. Lights Instantly While this stove, known as the Coleman Speed-Master, has been used and proved efficient in for- eign lands, it is manufactured by a Canadian companyâ€"The Cole- man Lamp and Stove Company. They released it for foreigners before Canadians in order to test out and improve its construction. Housewives, campers, doctors, restaurant operators, plumbers, garagemen and all others who have need of a one-burner stove will find the Speed-Master avail- able in the stores of all Coleman dealers.
