2--Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 12th, 1975 orono weekly times Second Class Mail Registratioii Number 6368 Published Every Wednesday At the Office of Publication SUBSCRIPTION RATES Canada $3.00 U.S.A. $4.50 A SOUNb DECISION ; The Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education made a sound decision at their last meeting when they turned the tables on hiring a liaison officer to co-ordinate the community use of schools other than the formal education of the youth of the various areas. Surely we do not have to be spoon-fed to the point that someone has to organize the use of schools for our purposes. Lets leave something for us to do and something that the ordinary citizen or ratepayer can take his or her initiative. What is so complicated that there is a need for a liaison officer to make use of the school at hours other than during school hours. If someone wishes to organize a group to play basketball, badminton, or what ever can they not make application to the concerned school and through the principal of the school make arrangements, providing the time is available to CARRY OUT THE PROGRAM. Just because the province will supply the board with $7,000 of our own money is no reason to hire a co-ordinator. As Mr. Carman stated you can add another $20,000 or $25,000 from local taxes to the $7,000 for such a service. As we understand it the policy is there all that is needed is a little gumption from those that want to use it and it surely doesn't require a $25,000 or $30,000 department to organize the program or to show the way, CANADA MUST HAVE GREATER CONTROL During the course of history in Canada there has been a continuous battle between the provinces and the federal government and we beleive that no time during the past is this importance as great as it is today. The dwindling supply of energy resources in the country make the issue now of great importance. The oil producing provinces, and hardly one can blame them from one point, are seeking to control the supply of energy at a cos to Canadians in other parts of the nation. This affec everyone across this country whether he lives in an Igloo in a penthouse apartment. It eats into the very c -re of country and its productivity. Not only are the oil and gas producing provn. flexing their muscles but of recent days the province o. Quebec is proposing energy development of a nuclear nature that could dry up even the nuclear source of power. The Belle province along with France are considering a Nuclear hydro plant in Quebec using enriched uranium which could deplete this source of fuel in Canada in a short period of time. They do not consider the rest of Canada in the decision nor do they consider thé fact that the Candu reactor has proven most successful, is Canadian made, and through it operation of using heavy water does conserve the supply of uranium in this country. It now appears that we as Canadian must give support to the federal government so to place them in a position at which they can deal with the provinces over energy supplies so that all Canadians will benefit from the resources that are in this country. Without this support, and a great deal must come from the province of Ontario and its government at Queen's Park. EDUCATION AND WISDOM The highly educated person is not necessarily a wise person. The unusually clever person does not always show wisdom in his cleverness. You can have a high IQ and still not be wise, Wisdom, real wisdom, can come to persons of quite ordinary intelligence. Wisdom is not so much a matter of intelligence as of what is done with intelligence. Teachableness is as significant as intelligence in the attaining of wisdom. And that is not simply a capacity to take formal instruction and pass examinations - - although such things cân be significant. A. N. Whitehead, one of the most influential pnilosphers of our time, said this: "A merely well-informed man is the most useless bore on God's earth." He added, "Now wisdom is the way in which knowledge is heia. It concerns thé handling of knowledge, its selection ior uie determination of relevant issues, its employment to add value to our immediate experience." In any education that is to count there is an inescapable element of sheer dogged grinding. If you wish to advance from milk to meat you must be prepared to chew gristle. And you mustn't expect to be spoo-fed: as the novelsit, E. M. Forster, put it, "Spoon-feeding in the long run teaches us nothing but the shape of the spoon." What we do with our educational opportunities has much to do with the degree of wisdom to which we attain. Stephen Leacock once said. "An. education, when it is all written out on foolscap, covers nearly ten sheets." Leacock made an important point there: much of the real value of your education is to-found in what remains after you have forgotten mijeh of what you deliberately set out to learn. And. in t!u* can be an essential source of wisdom. Up and down the book stacks Thursday, March I3th, 1975 ADULT The Complete Book of Woodworking Woodworking and Cabinetmaking by Byron W. According to the trend of the complaints that I have re- çeived-everything is bad about about the new Town set-up and everything was better under the old Police Village and Township of Clarke municipal organization. I disagree. Let us take a look at some of the improvements that have accrued to Orono since January January 1,1974 - the starting date of the New Town. Fire protection? Greatly improved with the addition of a second fire truck for the Orono fire hall. Water supply? A second well is in the works, all the paper work has been done and construction will start shortly. shortly. Your green thumb START GERANIUMS NOW Imagine your garden ablaze with scarlet and white Geraniums, Geraniums, or shimmering with thé softer shades of pink. To turn that dream into fact this summer, start garden Geranium Geranium plants now - from parent plants wintered indoors. "Before starting plants from cuttings, think back to the performance of the parent plants last summer," advises Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Agriculture and Food flower specialist, specialist, J. K- Hughes. "If the plants grew poorly, or had crinkled leaves or spotted foliage, they may be seriously diseased. There is little point in propagating cuttings from diseased plants. Wait until the spring planting season and buy new, disease-free plants from a top-quality grower instead." To take a cutting from a healthy plant, remove a leaf 1 with a portion of its stem. Dip the end of the stem into a fungicide, such ascaptan, and place it in a sterilized medium, such a perlite. Supply the cutting with some bottom heat to bring the temperature to about 70 degrees F. This temperature helps promote callusing and root formation. Keep the perlite barley mdist. After roots are established, plant the cuttings in a small container or flat filled with a soil mixture of one-third pasteurized soil, one-third peat and one-third perlite. Keep the plants in the bright, but sunless, window of a eool room. To ensure they are ready for transplanting in late May, fertilize them lightly and regularly. Speaking of wells, I can hear a question "The new well is ok-but where is our $30,000 surplus built up by our former water officials?" Don't worry, this Orono v 7*er surplus is to be applied to the costs of the new well and this will mean that the Orono people will have the benefit of their former water surplus. However-speaking of the water surplus, how did this surplus generate unless the former water officials overcharged overcharged the cost of water to Orono users? Cast your mind back to the work that was done in Orono's beautiful park last year by New Town recreation officials. officials. Lots of New Town effort went into that and the park looked better than it had for years. The swimming pool? It needed plenty of work-and it got it. Take a look at what is being done for the young people of the Orono community in the Township Hall under professional professional direction. Take à look some Sunday at the happy people en joying the Jamboree at the Township Hall- the results of New Town action. It is admitted that changes always bring some criticism as people yearn for the good old days---good old days that frequently never was. The matter that really turned me off was a call that I received from an irrate gent Saturday morning complaining complaining about the manner in which New Town officials handled the four inch snowfall that fell Friday. According to this Orono gent, the first Town truck came down his street with salt. Then latqr a snowplmv came through plowing and sanding. Then Saturday morning another another plowing was done. This gentleman's complaint? The snow plow put snow on his sidewalk. For goodness sakes--what is expected from municipal workers? workers? If the New Town plows and sanders and salt trucks 'i't condition Orono side str that lack of action would have been grounds for a beef. However, to complain because because your Town Public Works Department did a first class job only proves to me that there are too many old gaffers in Orono who have nèthing to do except to count their money and regard a changing world very sourly. Is regional Government working? Will Regional Government work? Actually it is too early to determine The principal is good and the change was needed. We have some fine people (not necessarily necessarily the elected politicians) working as civil servants. Adding this all up-Regional Government will likely be successful. A personal request to individuals--give the new system system time to prove itself--and stop bellyaching unless you have a bonafide complaint. Sincerely Kenneth E.
