March 9 was a lovely winter day with fresh clean snow and bright sunshine. My son and his wife and two young boys from Brampton were looking forward to a pleasant hike through the Forestry grounds before coming coming to visit me but, although they had their walk, it was quite disappointing, and when they arrived here they were highly indignant. They had walked from the north end to the mill pond and during that time were continually continually annoyed by snowmobiles snowmobiles being driven up and down the slopes and around the trees, polluting the air with their noise and exhaust fumes. Is government property property not out of bounds for these machines? Will they not damage trees and shrubs? If the drivers of these vehicles have no respect for this beautiful property, then steps should be taken to keep them out. Yours truly Dorothy Payne R. Mrs. Zegers showed ideas for decorating the covers of their folders and also for each meeting. For the February meeting she had used a Valentine, flower picture and had edged the write-up from the paper with small hearts. These ideas should help the children to make their books more interesting and attractive. attractive. The main interest of the evening was the making of a garden using the large bottles which the children had each brought. Some worked with the jars upright and some put them on their sides. First they were given some charcoal to put in to keep the soil sweet, then stones for drainage and then the potting soil. Some had brought their own plants but Mrs. Zegers supplied a large number of them. The plants each had chosen were planted in the soil. Mrs. Zegers showed how to use a long stick to make the hole if the opening was to small for the hand to go through. Any dead leaves or broken stems were removed, • the plant gently loosened from the pot, trying not to lose too much of the soil, the leaves gently gathered together and the Don't Leave It to Chance Be sure your home is truly protected by a good policy. Call us Millson Insurance Agency plant was then carefully dropped into the bottle and the soil firmed with the stick. The soil, was watered and the children were told to tie saran wrap over the opening to keep the moisture in. Some added fancy stones, shells or figurines. figurines. Everyone seemed to be quite pleased with their bottle gardens so take good care of them as they are to be shown in a class later on. The Junior Gardeners prayer was repeated and folders and membership cards were given given to the new members. Next meeting will be April 8. Plumbing and Heating Phone 983-5287 ' . Orono, Letter to Editor LETTER TO EDITOR. Dear Sir: In Regards to Letter in Orono Times from Ken Lyall For some time now, I have been sitting back listening to Ken Lyall spout off, but his letter last week (March 12) finally did it. To listen to him you would think Orono was still back in the horse and buggy days until Regional Government came along and saved us. Orono has a second fire truck and better fire protection, we always did have 2 trucks and the best protection in the area. The only difference now is instead, of the old Orono truck we have the old Bowmanville truck. Water supply, a second well is in the works he says. A second well was in the works long before Regional Government Government and would have been completed long ago under the older system. As for the thirty.. thousand surplus, the Orono rates are as low as any in the district and the surplus was built up partially from good management plus a charge that was set for service in the Orono Estates Subdivision. I agree the park is improved but this also coùld have been done just as easily if someone had lit a fire under the old Park Board and got them to spend their money instead of sitting on it. And I think our local Chamber of Commerce could have come up with a good program for the local kids if they had been given a chance. In fact, it was only after an appeal by them for the use of the old Town Hall that, any action resulted. Getting back to water, I see the Region wants to install meters in Orono, at what cost we don't know, to get more revenue. As the Orono system is financially sould I can only assume they want some of our money to pay off their other debts. And speaking of money, money, The Police Trustees received received $300.00 per year plus $150.00 for water and $100.00 for fire department to look after the whole Village. Mr. Lyall receives I think $15,000.00 and Mr. Entwisle $5,000.00 and the only time I have seem them in Orono was at -the Jamboree or passing ■ through. When Mr.- Lyall looks after Orono and Clarke I for one wish he would shut Township with the same up. interest and concern as some You uly of the old Council and Douglas sWrpson Trustees, then he can com- Former Trustee for Orono. ment all he wants.
