L"àll says Courtlce Committeebacksoff Concept will die road maitainance A week ago Monday Counc. Ken Lyall was the guest speaker at the Pine Ridge Kinsmen Club and during the course of his address stated that regional government had already proved itself at the local level but not so at the first tier or regional level. He said it would take at least seven years before a proper assessment could he made of this form of government. Counc. Lyall covered many UNITED CHURCH Orono Pastoral Charge Minister Rev. B. E. "There are a lot more serious things" he said. In speaking of regional council he said there were a lot of dead heads and that except for about ten council- men "you could forget about the rest". Counc. Lyall was questioned questioned about regional water and sewage personnel having to drive to north of Orono to punch-in in the morning, then return - to Bowmanville to work, return again to Orono to punch-out and again return to Bowmanville to their homes. It was stated that this was a lot of unnecessary travelling and waste of time. Counc. Lyall said, "Its foolish, I'll look into it." In speaking of the Courtice Concept Counc. Lyall said he did not think it would go ahead. He pointed out that the people in Courtice did not want it and that the scheme was a product of the government government during the time of expansion. He said there was no shortage of houses, it was a matter of high prices. One of his audience stated that the Courtice concept would go ahead but Counc. Lyall held to his opinion that it would die first. Cotinc. Lyall informed his audience that the affairs of the municipality rested with them and they should keep a good close eye on their local government. He said he would continue to tell it like it is and followed up by saying that someone had to be outspoken. "I enjoy a battle when right is on my side", he said. In Speaking against the proposed Darlington generating generating station Counc. Lyall said he was opposed due to the effect that the series of plants could have on the ecology of Lake Ontario. "We want to leave something for our children and grandchildren", he said. He proposed they use the waters of James Bay rather than the waters of Lake Ontario. Mrs. Lynda Chamberlaine made her third approach to municipal officials asking that a road between lots 16 and 17 in Concession 5 of the former Township of Clarke be given winter maintenance was rejected for the second time last week by the public works department of the Town of Newcastle. The request for winter maintenance maintenance has also come before council being on March 5th when council referred thé issue back to the committee. At the council meeting Coun, Lyall was in agreement to give approval for the winter maintenance but the referral out voted his proposal. Mrs. Chamberlaine and her husband have purchased a house on the side road which receives some summer maintenance maintenance but no winter maintenance maintenance such as snow plowing. plowing. It was pointed out by Works director, Jack Dunham, Dunham, that it would cost $25,000 to prepare the road for such maintenance. 7!ffnW!J1T\* h Wk AFTER 1 ALL SAID, and done" theres A LOT MORE SAID SETS THAN GETS /, WATSON'S Marine and Cycle Orono Phone 983-5343 Building a House? or remodelling your present one?
