Xendal News After enjoying a wonderful winter when the buses travelled travelled every day over open roads it was indeed a surprise for all traffic on the main highways to come to a complete halt from a winter storm on April the third and fourth. Mr. Sterling Swerdfiger was travelling travelling west on the sixth line just east of the former sixth line school at 7:30 p.m. when his truck ended up in the ditch due to the stormy weather. He stayed in it all night waiting for the snow plough which was unable to get through. In the morning he walked home. At 3 p.m. April 4 the snow plow came. In the past the license has been $3.00 for dogs of any sex or number. The new fee has been changed to $7.00 per dog regardless of sex. MILEAGE FOR COUNCILLORS DROPPED Council dropped a proposal to pay mileage to council members when attending duly duly called meetings of council and committees. It was proposed they be paid 15 cents a mile with the Mayor getting a flat $50.00 a month. Mayor said it was unfair for a councillor having to drive a distance with no remuneration remuneration while others might walk for nothing. Counc. Entwisle stated that he was informed that such a payment was legal. REDUCING STAFF? Counc. Lyall asked if council council was reducing staff in the building inspection department department due to the fact that the department issued 35 building permits in the first two months of 1975 compared to 135 in 1974. Mayor Rickard said he had confidence that the area would go ahead and that some of the staff is assisting with other departments departments at the present time. READING COURSE A result of new emphasis being placed on the reading capabilities of children in the schools, teachers will be offered summer courses in reading instruction this year, by the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education.
