Hambly, vice-president, Hambly's Beverages Ltd., is part of a fund raising program for athletes in training for the Olympic games. The campaing is called "Let's Get Together". Offices of the bottlers of Cocoa-Cola across the country, are to become clearing houses for the $2.00 donations which the company asks the public to make to the support of Canada's athletes. Each donor gets a "supporter" decal which can go anywhere from a car window to school books. Mr. Hambly of Hambly's Beverages Ltd.stated that our athletes need facilities, training, coaching and international competition. Hambly's Beverages Ltd. kicked off the campaing with an individual donation of $800.00. "We want to help our Canadian athletes prepare to meet competition from the world's best. One hundred percent of everything we collect will go towards their training through the Canadian Olympic Association", Mr. H ambly said. (Inyended for last week) ORONO FLYER NOVICE CONSOLATION WINNERS The Orono Flyer Novice Hockey team recently won the Consolation Trophy for the United Counties League. ORONO KINSMEN PEE WEES CHAMPIONS The Orono Kinsmen Pee Wees are the proud owners of the cahmpionship trophy for the United County Hockey league. The local boys won the trophy in an exciting series with Bewdley and had to come up with a goal in overtime in the last game to take the championship. BANTAM CHAMPIONSHIP FINALLY DECIDED The Orono Eagles Bantam club after a close series with their rivals in Orono, the Dutch Oven bantams took the championship for the United Counties League. The battle for the championship went right down to the final game which even had to go into overtime to decide the winner. A week-ago Friday night the Dutch Oven team edged out a 3-2 win over the Eagles which forced another game to be played in the series. John Malda, Dennis Simpson and Kenny Evans were the sharpshooters for the Dutch dven crew in their win. Ron Talsma and Mark Charland scored the two Eagle goals. A week ago Saturday the two team met again to decide the championship. The game ended in a three-all tie and it was not until the 12.32 mark of the third overtime period that Mark Charland scored for the Eagles to give them the championship. Ron Opoka scored two goals for the Dutch ' Oven crew with the third by John Malda. Kevin Russell, Ror Talsma and Gary Clapdorp shared the three goals for thé Eagles within the regular game time. Natural Mark Charland became the hero of the series as far as the Eagles were concerned. : SOFTBALL MEETING The Recreation department of the Town of Newcastle is holding a meeting this Thursday, April 10th at 7.30 p.m. in the Committee room of the Bowmanville Town Hall. At that time they will consider the possibility of forming a recreation softball league for intermediates, 18 years and up. Anyone interested is asked to attend this meeting. GIRL'S SOFTBALL Registrations are now being taken by the Recreation Department for girl's softball for Bantams, 7 to 13 years of age and Midgets, 13 and under 17 years of age. Registrations are being taken in Bowmanville and at the Orono Youth Centre. It is'the intention to have an interlocking schedule -between Bowmanville, Darlington and Clarke Townships. Workouts will start Saturday, April 19th, weather permitting. SOCCER FOR BOYS Plans are underway to provide soccer for boys in the age bracket of 7 to 1'4 years as of January 1st of the current year. Those wishing to play may register with either the Newcastle Recreation Department in Orono or Bowmanville or with the Orono Amateur Athletic Association. Await Orienteering club approval makes preparations flood-plain mapping The Ganaraska Region Conservation Conservation Authority are awaiting awaiting approval from the Ministry Ministry ot Natural Resources to carry-out flood plain mapping of the eastern section of the Town of Newcastle. The Authority has set aside a sum of $80,000 in the budget for this project which is to be completed completed this year. Although prices have not been obtained for the work it is felt that the cost will greatly exceed the $80,000 and some adjustment will have to be made in the budget to cover the additional cost. Purchase of land in the Newcastle area may have to be deferred to meet the cost of flood plaining. plaining. SERVING UP A TENNIS CLINIC The Rceration Department is hopeful of having a Teens Tennis Clinic at the Orono courts during the spring season. There will also be such a clinic at the Darlington Sports Centre. Further information will be available in the very near future. ORGANIZED SOFTBALL The Newcastle Department of Recreation is trying to organize a softball league for boys 13 to 17 years of age. - This is fur me whole Towr of Newcastle .and would include all areas such as Enniskillen. Tyrone, Orono, Newtonville, Bowmanville, Newcastle Village, Courtice, Hampton and other areas. A meeting is being called for Wednesday, April 16, 1975 at 7:30 p.m. in the committee room of the Darlington Sports Centre on Taunton Road in Hampton. The Clarke Orienteering Club has now formulated plans for the coming summer season including meets, training training sessions and trim-conditioning. trim-conditioning. Short winners with Tim Cart- men winner of the Jr. Men's Long Walk and Bill Daléthe winners of the Jr. Men's Short Walk The club has organized a number of training sessions for the month of April on the 13, 20 and 27th. Ian Brennan, Tim Palotie and Risto Santala are in charge of the session both grouped in advance and beginners. It is pointed out that the training site will be posted from Kirby on these specific days. On June 7 and 8 the club is also holding a two day meet with further details to come 4 later. It has been pointed out that the Clarke Orienteering Club is one of the first to be organized in Canada and is well known for its achievements achievements throughout Canada, the U.S. as well as in many areas in Europe. The club is now open to membership costing $5.00 for a junior member, $10.00 for a senior member and $15.00 for a family membership.
