Gord Alldread and Bob Hancock view an old mill stone which was found recently recently by Mr. Hancock in the bank of tiie Orono stream behind the business section of the Village. The stonfe was reclaimed reclaimed from the stream on Tuesday evening and now rests as a museum piece on the lawn of the Clarke Public Library. Excitement was rather high on Tuesday evening when a group from the Clarke Museum Museum and Archives groun in Orono assembled on the banks of the Orono stream to watch the reclaiming of a mill Stone from the bed of the stream. The millstone which possibly has rested in the bed of the stream since 1882 when an old mill burned to the ground. The stone was found by Mr. Hancock while walking along the stream earlier this year. With the use of a tow truck from Orono Towing the stone was taken from the stream and now rests on the lawn at the Clarke Library and Museum. Museum. The stone is thought to weigh in the neighbourhood of 1500 pounds and it could well have originated in Scotland as at that time in history it was quite common to import the grinding stone from that country. The stone along with a matching stone was used to grind wheat into flour. According to Mrs. Helen Schmid of Orono the stone was more than likely used in a grist mill which was located on the stream. Mrs. Schmid points out that Solomon Hooper Hooper who came to Canada on the PRIME in 1832 constructed the second grist mill in Clarke Township locating it on now what is known as the Orono creek. He started construction construction of the mill in 1835 and it was opened for business in May of 1837. The first grist mill to .open in Clarke Township was located otfg mile east of Newcastle at what is now known as Honev ORONO WEEKLY TIMES, MAY 14th, 1975 -9 Hollow- Thomas Hooper until 1848 In tile summer of 1845 when it was sold to Andrew Thomas Hooper immigrated Nichol and later in 1853 to J. to Orono and worked with his L. AUDITOR'S REPORT To the supporters of Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education, We have examined the Balance Sheet of the Northumberland and Newcastle Board i of Education as at December 31st, 1974 and the Revenue Fund Statement of Operations and the Statement of Source and Application of Càpital F'unds for the year then ended. Our examination included a general review of the accounting procedures and such tests of accounting records and other supporting evidence as we considered necessary in the circumstances. In our opinion these Financial Statements present fairly the financial position of the Board as at December 31st, 1974 and the results of its operations and the'source and application of its capital funds for the year then ended, in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted for Ontario school boards applied on a basis consistent with that of the preceding year.
