10--Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 30th. 1975 ^^ SPORTS SPORTS BUBBLE FOR OSHAWA The City of Oshawa last week received approval from the province for a provincial grant amount to $120,000 in support of an air-supported sports and fitness bubble at the Civic Fields in Oshawa. The city however, had previously taken this out of their capital expenditures for 1975 but due to the support from the province it is expected that Oshawa will bring the project back into their budget for 1975. The total cost of the bubble is expected to be $314,000 with the major portion being supported through taxation in Oshawa. The sports and fitness centre will be designed mostlv for winter use with dimensions of 293 feet by 135 feet. It would include a 200 metre banked track, four tennis courts, four squash courts, a general fitness area and change rooms. The province will use monies from the provincial lottery for their grant. ORONO TENNIS CLUB TO OPEN MAY 4th The Orono Tennis Club opens its schedule of play on May 4th with an opening meeting at 2,00 p.m. The club is calling for membership at this time and application forms for membership are available at stores in the area. The club has set Monday evenings for men, Tuesday evenings for women, Wednesday evenings for couples and Thursday evenings for senior students; All other times are open excepting Saturday mornings for a clinic for Juniors, 14 years of age and under. A Clinic will be held at this time for Juniors. Memberships for the club are: Juniors, $5.00, Senior, 15 to 17 years, $10.00, adults, 18 and over $15.00, couples, $25.00 and family membership with children under 17 years, $35.00. Officers for the club for 1975 are: Dick Rutherford, president, Mrs. W. Lowes, vice-president, Miss Janet Duvall, secretary, Mrs. Peggy Sawyer, treasurer. Junior Directors are: Christine Selby, Yvonne Schoertmaker, David Ard and Margo Payne. Application forms for memberships will be available at the park on May 4th. MINOR BASEBALL IN ORONO Orono minor Baseball practices will start this week, weather permitting, with teams playing the following nights : Midget - Tuesday (age 16-17) Tyke - Wednesday (age 9-10-11) T-Ball - Thursday (age 6-7-8) Girls Softball - Friday (age7-13) All practices will start at 6:00 p.m. Anyone interested in playing whether they have signed up or not please report on assigned nights. Thank you, Orono Amateur Athletic Association WILL DECIDE FLORIDA TRIP THURSDAY At Kawartha Raceway a battle has been underway for the past month and a half among the drivers in a contest with the prize a trip to Florida. Junior West and Rejean Body have entered the final phase of the contest and these two drivers Will decide the winner of the trip for two on Thursday evening in their driving in five events on the card. In the first division of the semi-finals West took a big margin in his win with 150 points. His closest rival, Blaise MacDonell had 50 points. Last Saturday the second division of the semi-finals was played out and Rejean Body earned the right to advance to the finals this Thursday. The contest will be decided with drives in. the fourth through to the seventh race. . TAKES THREE SATURDAY RACES AT KAWARTHA Gerald Robinson came up with three wins at the Kawartha Raceway. It was a good night for Robinson. Robinson took his first win of the night in the third race driving Karen's Comet. Armbro Pine finished second with Junior West third with Coastal Kelly. Robinson driving Snowman Pero in the eighth posted his second win in 2.09. Frank Stacey was second in the race driving Glenholme Joe. Derek Newman placed third driving S. Allen's horse Hoot Van. Keith West was entered in the same race and with Sunset Anne placed sixth in her third start of the season. Robinson topped it all off with his third win of the night in the last race of the. evening. In this event he was driving Ta'rpot Bob. Junior West notched a win on Saturday with a good drive with Hilltop Anders in the second featured race. Robby Sween Hill second, Greentree Steve third. Gerald Robinson was fourth in the fifth race driving Roger Ringo while Derek Newman was fifth with Wee Albert. Newman returned in the sixth to finish second with Misty Dream. The win went to Busher. In the seventh race Newman placed third in a drive with Hard Luck Kid. The win went to Teddy Dem with Philwar Byrd second. Frank Stacey placed fifth with Tuxedo Kid in the ninth with Newman well back with Rogerland. Kawartha D. Bÿe was the winner. Last week at the Clarke High School gym on Thursday a gymnastic competiton was held for County Elementary schools. In this competition Kirby Centennial Public school had four participants who did extremely well in the various events. The students had also previously competed in the Western Area competition competition earning the right to advance td the County Competition Competition Debbie Ripley (left) placed fourth in the Western Area competiton for Floor Routine while Heather Sawyer (centre) (centre) placed first in the same competiton and sixth out of 22 contestants in the county competition on Thursday. Heather also placed second in the western competition in vaulting and on Thursday placed first at the County rneet. Megan Hurst placed second in vaulting in the County competition and third in floor routine in the western competition. competition.
