-oit ON O WEEKLY TIMES,' H NK 25Ch, 1975 9 r o no we ek 1 y t i mes MM AI PARKSTO lillCdMK MOU K IMPORTANT La si week a report was issued by the federal government concerning transportai ion in urban areas and it noted the many problems that do exist and that will have to he faced if our present life-style is to continue. The report spoke specifically of recreational traffic and the problems it brings. Most everyone is well aware of these problems if they travel during the peak holiday periods. In this area by the year 2000 it is expected that traffic will double and that even with the building of highway 407 the conditions will be much worse than they now exist: It was pointed out that the road network in the region is now having trouble handling the week-end holiday traffic. The federal government on Monday night with the presentation of their budget came through with a gasoline tax for pleasure which will add further costs to holiday travel. The tax, now in effect, amounts to an additional 10 cents a gallon. Later this year the oil companies are expected to add a further five cents. The total fifteen cent increase will raise gasoline costs by almost twenty-five percent. Not only will we have congested highways but they will be far more costly to drive upon. It would appear that local municipalities should begin now looking to the end to provide more recreational activities within their own boundaries. Conservation authorities can also help to bring facilities closer to hand for the general public and it may well be that such areas as the Ganaraska forest in the future may be a meeca for recreational activities as well as an area for wood production. Our society in masny ways has been a mobile society and this may have to change in the near future due to cost of travel, cost of building roads and the lack of energy. IS THE REGIONAL SYSTEM WORKING The upper tier of Regional government has repeatedly been knocked as 'too far away from the people'. This is a rather nubilous statement with the real proof of the form of government being its accomplishments and its work within the community. It appears that the upper tier is working well and this is evident even in the Orono community. Recently the region has paved portions of Main Street, at Cob Hill and at the very south. This work has been needed for a number of years and in the past no action had been taken by the county. With yet to have two years under its belt the region, through the upper tier administration, has had this work completed. Further the regional road system has been making improvements of both a physical and optical nature along the Taunton Road. They have been stoning some of the ditches which have been eroding and this can only be termed an improvement. A Day Care Centre is coming to Bowmanville and this is yet another indication that the upper level of the region is working within the Town for the social benefit of its people Needless to sya it could have been some years before action would have been taken in this matter under the old system. In the matter of taxation the rate has not gone out of sight and in fact a $4.00 average increase appears more than reasonable especially when one sees other costs going out of sight. This of course was made possible due to an additional grant from the province but even without this additional grant the increase would ha vè not been that great. It would appear that regional government may be a success and this would include the upper tier. 1. Award'of Excellent - 1 pt.X. 2. Representing school on 3 teams ! pi. 3.
