L- Second Class Mail Registration Number 6368 Published every Wednesday at the Office of Publication SUBSCRIPTION RATES Canada $3.00 per annum U.S.A. $4.50 per annum NO SOLUTION Apparently the Town of Newcastle Committee of the whole supported a motion by Councillor Lyall that school boards be required to send out their own tax bills. This move by the committee was supported in that they felt the municipality was getting the full blame for increased taxes which this year are to be considerable in certain Wards of the Town. It is a fact that the municipal tax bill does include charges for educational purposes and these do add to a great degree the increase which is apparent for 1975. Provincial legislation requires that the municipal councils collect sums of monies for education and as well as conservation authorities over which the local municipalities have no control. To have all groups with individual taxing rights submit individual tax bills would only lead to further confusion and added expense. No doubt we would be receiving tax bills at all times of the year with no continuity. The present tax bill does clearly define what amount of money is apportioned to education and what amount is apportioned for municipal use. After spending millions of dollars on education surely it is conceivable that the taxpayers is able to read the tax bill and be aware where the money is going. Lets not add to our present bureâucy by setting up further tax departments. JULY 17th, 1976 OLYMPICS It is now less than a year when the Olympic torch will be placed in its place at the Olympic site in Montreal for the beginning of the greatest sports spectacle ever to take place in Canada. The planning and preparation over the past two years has not been easy nor has it met with any degree of acceptance throughout the country. It would appear from all the reports we read or hear many are just waiting for the day Mayor Drapeau becomes snowed under so it can be reported "I told you so". Whatever Drapeau may be he certainly has the will and stamina to weather the storm and to bring to Canada the World Olympics. His determination is undaunted and right or wrong for this he must be given credit. No weak-kneed politician is Drapeau. The CBC, in a news letter to the media, point out during the sixteen days of the meet, they will be televising 175 hours of competitions, including the elaborate opening and closing ceremonies. Surely this in itself will be a relief from the cop and robber programs now saturating the television screen. IT WOULD BE A HORNETS NEST Trustee George Blyth of the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education asks for a study of setting hours that teachers must remain in the school. This would surely stir up a hornets nest especially at a time when the teachers are concerned over working conditions. The matter came up for considerable discussion at a recent meeting of the board with varying opinions being expressed. The administration appeared to take a dim view of the proposal and felt all was well with the system. Some board members would like to see hours set in the teachers contract when they would have to be in the school or on school work. It would be difficult to assess all tèachers work to the school or classroom and in fact to hold teachers in the school would not neceSsaryily make them better teachers nor more dedicated. The present system has been in vogue too long to disrupt. In general we feel the majority do give full effort in their profession. Harriet Reisler of Port Hope in a letter has stated that 99 percent of the teachers are not clock watchers and that it would be a sad day when teachers have hours set by government. More can be done under a proper relationship between the teachers, the principals, the administration and the board than can ever be accomplished by setting down hourly times for work. Consultation along tis chain of command is all that should every be needed. As we under it the efficient use of time by teachers depends on the time tabling and this is in the hands of the principals who should beconcerned that efficiency is upheld within the schools. Orono's Poet As the Astronauts circled around and around They say something gleam down there on the ground Then one of them said, "It is my belief- Them dang things are only a new set of teeth They sparkled and shone as she hopped over the fence On her way for a coffee at her neighbours expense She now talks with a lisp as cute as can be Onlooker asked if she could Kiss, she said, "Lets try it and see." He blushed and stammered and had to back down Who thought he'd be that shy, this man about town He's great on the talk but with actions he's slow As he, watches the fence hoppers as they come and go The pant savers' worn out, it was used many times There's a new one there now to cover the spines The fence post is sagging the wires are all sprung They may be getting older but they're still thinking young. By Stander When school is out it is sometimes hard to find something something to do but this group of youngesters entered into business business Sunday afternoon and were selling green apples for a thin dime, with or without worm holes. This venture, somehow or other nétted them $1.09 which they are to give to the Orono Firemen for Muscular Muscular Dystrophy. The group were again back in business Monday afternoon with a Carnival behind the Fire Hall with games, lemonade and a few tricks. In total they raised $3.71 for the Dystrophy fund.
