G. W. Brun ton Community Services Officer Cedar leaf minor may b treated now The Cedar Leaf Miner is a smati grayish moth native to Canada. It is mostly destructive destructive in the spring larvae stage, during which time it feeds on insides of the cedar leaves, a browning of the tips of the branches. A high larvae population can result in severe severe thinning of the crown. However, it is felt that this condition is no indicator that the insect is killing the tree. It might also be that the browning has been caused by other conditions, and may be accentuated by different factors. factors. Damage is sometimes confused by other forms of injury to the white cedar, this includes: freeze damage and excessive salt damage near highways. We would not recommend that you go out and cut down the trees, but rather undertake control me- Queen's park report THE PROPOSED PICKERING AIRPORT On Thursday, July 10, Transport Minister John Rhodes Rhodes sent a letter to federal Transport Minister,' Jean Marchand, explaining Ontario's Ontario's feelings about the proposed airport site. In his letter Mr. Rhodes emphasized that Ontario is not totally rejecting the proposals proposals but that.at this time, with our economic situation as it is, Ontario cannot afford to supply the necessary roads and services. The infrastructure required for an airport of this sort is vast and costly. The roads, water and sewage facilities and transit services which would be required by the airport are expected to cost between $80 and $100 million over the next four years. At this particular moment, the province is facing serious economic problems in many important areas such as housing, energy, health, education, education, etc. It is the opinion of the provincial government that the large sums of money which would be heeded to service the airport could be put to better use in these other areas at this time. The Ontario Government does recognize the fact that any decision regarding the location of an international airport rests in federal hands. The government also recognizes recognizes that the original arguments arguments in favour of the airport were and are varied. Ontario's action must not be interpreted as a rejection of the proposals nor as a refusal to co-operate in the scheme. The decision of the government government was made with the interests of the residents of Ontario in mind. A delay in the building plans for the Pickering airport will allow time for further study of the impact of the airport. There is the environmental argument against the airport and the economic argument in favour of the site; both of these must be considered and the pros and cons further evaluated. Alex Carruthers asures if you are sure that Cedar Leaf Miner is causing the damage. One of the most desirable methods of control involves pruning defective branches m the spring before the moths emerge, The branches branches should lie destroyed right after removal. The most effective chemical control is dimethoate. It can be used as a foliar spray when the larvae begin to feed, or in May before the larvae pupate. However, during June and July. .V thion and carbaryl max applied to prevent the moths from laying their eggs. For further information on the Leaf Miner Control, contact the agricultural office in Bowmanville.
