From God's Garden by Dorothy Gurney. The last week of July was extremely warm and the last day of July the temperature reached one hundred degrees in Toronto. On Sunday morning morning a welcome rain saved the gardens but more rain is needed. the Kendal Women's Institute Institute took their annual outing on Wednesday evening July 30. Twelve members had dinner at the New Dutch Oven, then took in the two plays put on by the Harbour Theatre^ at the Port of Newcastle. The plays were mediocre but the setting was unique. It is very beautiful down by the harbour and the big tent was like a cosy room. The first play was very juvenile and the second had a lot of repetition. There are a lot of fine homes near the harbour on the east side. In pioneer days the Port of Newcastle was a very busy place. On Sunday morning the choir was made up of seven singers who had spent a week at camp. There were three members of the White family of Maple Grove and four Colvins of Orono. They sang their camping songs led by Mr. Colvin. Mrs. George Brewer played the Hammond organ. Mr. Marvin Colvin spoke on "Christ the head of our Church". He referred to some of the event at camp. The music and the message were very fine but the audience was very small. Next Sunday Rev. G. Montgomery Montgomery will be back in his pulpit at 11:15 a.m. On August 12 Tuesday afternoon the United Church Women will hold their annual picnic meeting at the home of Mr. & Mrs. T. Stevens. Wë specially welcome the families families to this event. Mr. D. H. Skerratt is a patient in Oshawa Memorial Hospital. We hope they will be able to find the cause of the intense pain in his hip. Mr. Ralph Geach entered Oshawa Hospital to have the operation on his knee which took place August 5th. To negotiate fire „ protection - Courtice j Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, August 6th, 1975--5 Newcastle and Oshawa councillors councillors will meet in the near future to consider having the Oshawa Fire Department provide provide fire protection for the Courtice area in the Town of Newcastle. Newcastle council passed a motion asking for a meeting with' Oshawa Which request was approved by the council ' of Oshawa. Counc. Cowman first proposed proposed the Newcastle motion siting the distance from the Bowmanville downtown fire station to the Courtice area. Oshawa's No. 2 fireball is located on the Townline Road, just west of Courtice. The ideal solution according to Counc. Cowman, would be to build a new Courtice fire station, but she said uncertainty uncertainty about Courtice's future makes that impossible at the present time. Aid. Christine Thomas, of Oshawa, said the city agreed to provide certain Darlington Township industries with fire protection in the past, but the service was not extended because the township council of the time declined to share in the costs. The Alderman said any agreement would require satisfactory financial arrangements arrangements with the Town of Newcastle. The Town of Newcastle have received a report from Totten and Sims regarding the location of a new fire hall in the Village of Newcastle. The report does favour the present site providing the Town can obtain the adjacent Bell property. The Bell Co, at one time purchased this site from the Village and now the Town would like it back to build the new proposed hall. According to Councillor K. Entwisle proposed a building costing in the neighbourhood fe of $170,000 which he felt was g somewhat elaborate for its purpose in the community. I I The project is now being g held up awaiting information ■ on whether or not the Bell _ property could be available to ■ the Town of Newcastle * Al THE NEED ISGREAT VOLUNTEER BLOOD DONOR CLINIC Wednesday, August 6th 1:30-4:30 p.m. 6:30 - 9:00 p.m. LIONS CENTRE, BOWMANVILLE For Transportation Call 623-9010 the day of the clinic (■_ BLOOD IS LIFE H P ASS IT ON 1 I I 1 I 1 ■ I É I Grand Free Flower 1 I Free Coffee !
