V 2-- Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, August 13th, 1975 r------■---- 1 an editorial L. À THE RACE IS ON On Monday Premier Davis announced that the provincial election would be held on September 18th and this announcement ended speculation that an election was on its way. The announcement also puts the election machine both for the province and the individual parties into full speed ahead. The Conservative party, the government of the day has been preparing the election over the past three or four months and being the government have had the advantage to set the stage for the election. Davis, as in the last election appears to be showing strength as a leader and also makes the point that he is in full battle with the federal government. In this move he turns the elector away from the problems within the province and lays the blame flatly on the liberals in Ottawa. This, of course, is not the first time this has been done by the Ontario conservatives nor is it likely to be the last. The Ontario government has appeared to be one of action of late and decision which has been made has been clear cut. It often appears to us that we abound with legislation from the governing body just before an election. The liberals following their Windsor meeting have been rather quite. Robert Nixon, liberal leader, announced at the Windsor meeting that the party would not be making any policy statements at that time but would contain their statements to the election campaign. The time is now for the liberals to express this policy statement and to endeavour to convince the voting public that they are the logical alternative to the Conservatives. This is not going to be any easy job because the Davis crew are well entrenched at Queen's Park and they have done their ground work well in the past few months. Stephen Lewis appears to be still plouding along and with his party members have done well in opposition to the conservatives. The NDP road to form the government is still a long way off but one thing that can be said for this party - they are workers and if time and effort means anything at all they could make gains within the province. It is going to be interesting to see how both the liberals and the NDP expect to break through the shield now protecting the conservatives. The conservatives being ir. power for well over thirty years do have a lot to answer for, but will be this be kept under wraps during the election campaign. But Davis and his friends have also done a lot of the right things too. STILL TIME TO GIVE YOUR SUPPORT The annual Orono Amateur Athletic Carnival is being held to-night at the grounds of the Durham Central Fair in Orono. Your atendance would be appreciated by the organization which supports winter and summer sports in the community. The Athletic Association has not only operated the arena over the past years but also promote local sports such * as hockey and skating. This group is a volunteer group and through the financial success of this endeavour are able to make improvements in their program. Give your support to-night. EARLIER ELECTIONS WOULD NOT IMPROVE VOTE The Association of Municipalities of Ontario at their recent meeting discussed the possibility of moving the municipal elections ahead of the present first Monday in December. Some delegates felt that by moving the date ahead it would improve the turnout at the polls which in the majority of cases is quite miserable. It is not uncommon to have the vote turnout in the neighbourhood of 40 percent and in some Centres even less. It would seem to us that the people themselves must become more interested in the affairs that go on about them. If they lack this concern, which they do, then no date would make any improvement in the turnout at the polls, It is surprising that on the one hand most object to forms of government which operate on a larger scale such as regions. They state that government of their affairs are being taken away from them,On the other hand when they do have the small local government they do not even express their views at the polls. Apathy towards government is very strong and the change of voting da tes is not going to improve this condition. We have often felt that our educational system could bring the young people much closer to their government through the educational system. At the present time such studies are quite limited and superficial. "Show Off Fresh Fruits In Salads!"
