The Jubilee camp, held every five years, features programs that enable scouts, aged from eight years and up, to achieve a high proficiency in scouting skills and to expand their knowledge and understanding of Hungarian folklore. Each day a Hungarian Hungarian historical figure who made an outstanding contribution contribution to Christianity will be honoured in special ceremonies. ceremonies. Late Sa turday afternoon the Jubilee Camp featured a special pageant of Hungarian International ethnic folklore. It was held in a natural amphitheatre on the grounds: of the campfeaturing dancing, singing and special costumes. The program was lively and colourful. At midnight on Saturday an ecumenical service was held around an outdoors campfire. The camp has registered scouts and girl scouts from Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Brazil, the United States and Venezula. NDP Candidate Doug Moffatt has suggested that High School students be given the opportunity to act as poll clerks in the September 18th election in the Durham East Riding. He intends to bring the proposal before the concerned concerned school boards to allow students to make application for these election jobs and to attend the polls on election day. The matter will be brought before the Northumberland Northumberland and Newcastle Board this coming Thursday evening. evening. Mr. Moffatt would expect the appointments would be made irregardless of political affiliation. In speaking with the NDP Candidate last week he stated he had already approached the administration of the various boards and had been well received with the i ,ea. He said it would be brought before the boards at their next meetings. It is suggested that students would make application to be appointed poll clerks with the NDPs or the Conservatives. This will be finalized following following decisions by the Boards of Education. The NDP Party in the Durham East Riding has the responsibility of presenting qualified poll clerks to the Returning Officer due to the fact that they were the runners-up in the last provincial provincial election. The Conservatives, Conservatives, having won the last election appoint the Deputy-- returning officers. Mr. Moffatt feels it is a real opportunity to allow students to get an insight into the election procedure and he said he would hope that the Conservatives would follow suit with their appointments. MPP Dr. Macllveen has been reported as putting a damper on the idea stating that if it were done in Durham East it should then be done in all Ridings throughout the province. "I sympathize with his thoughts. It's a good idea, but it should be part of the election reform act," was the reported action of Dr. Macllveen. Macllveen. The election act according to Mr. George T, Pollitt, Returning Officer for Durham East states that a poll clerk must be able to vote, thus the clerk must be eighteen years of age along with other voting requirements. Apparently the act does not rule out the use of students for this position and as such it would depend to a great degree whether or not the school boards would allow the students to be absent from school on September 18th to carry out this election duty. Pay for the day amounts to around $25.00. Additional $600,000 for Clarke addition In a press release from Queen's Park, Alex Carruth- ers, reports that an additional grant of $600,000 has been approved by the Honourable Thomas Wells, Minister of Education, for improvements to the Clarke High School. The additional $600,000 gront brings the total grant to $1,600,000 for the project; $1,000,000 having been previously previously approved. The grant will permit the removal of the 12 portable classrooms presently in use at the school and will provide, as well, an additional gymnasium, gymnasium, an addition to the cafeteria, a new resource centre, an expansion of the guidance facilities and improved improved music and science facilities. ALEX CARRUTHERS, DURHAM Alex Carrut. iers, in a press •elease from Queen's Park, states that tenders are to be advertised for the Ministry of Correctional Services on August August 18th and 20th for washroom washroom alterations at the Pine Ridge School in Bowmanville. The completion date is estimated to be the 29th of February, 1976.
