Ontario THE ONLY. TIME A LOT OF PEOPLE RESPECT OLD AGE, IS WHEN, IT'S BOTTLED A proposed 60 per cent increase in day care centre fees was postponed by Burba Burba Region council Wednesday, Wednesday, pending another look by its social services committee. The proposal from the committee would have raised the fees to $8 per day, to cover what the region says is an expense of $7.97 per day. Led by Coun. George Ashe (Pickering), who wanted the increase phased in by January January next year, council told the committee to reconsider the planned increase along with another motion which would have asked the province province to allow municipali ties to collect additional revenue from families able to afford day care. Also sent back to the committee was a proposal that a minimum rate of 25 cents be paid by all parents or |guardians taking advantage of the day care facilities. NOT APPROPRIATE 1 Coun. Ashe said he didn't think it was appropriate to bring in an increase of 60 per cent all at once, Coun. Alan Dewar (Oshawa) said $8 per day amounts to about 16 per cent of the annual income of a person making $10,500 per year, which is , the salary where subsidies begin. The cost of hiring a babysitter babysitter for one evening was cited as being more than $8 by Coun. Gerry Emm (Whitby) who agreed with the proposals. proposals. It was pointed out that the fees in other municipalities are generally much higher than those Durham Regional social services committee is planning. Chairman ruth Be- stwick (Oshawa) said that about 50 percent of people using day care services in Durham Region would pay a $8 maximum daily fee. Coun. Alex Robertson (Pickering) (Pickering) suggested that most families today operate on a very tight budget. Any in- ! crease of this magnitude would severely hurt them. people.
