8--Oronn Weekly Times, Wednesday, September :!rd, 1975 An introduction to bird watching by Roy Forrester Some months ago your editor was presented with a guide to field identification of the Birds of America. The book by Chandler Robbins, B. Brunn and H. S. Zim is complete with coloured plates of all birds, their migration pattern and habitat areas as well as Sonagrams of most of the birds listed. To say the least we felt that it would be no problem in making identification identification of the birds in our area. During the past few months we have become amazed at the number of different birds that do inhabit this area John De With Real Estate Limited Realtor Bowmanville 623-3950 and 623-3111 For Prompt, Efficient Service when buying or selling Contact: Joe Barnoski 786-2202 Ross Davidson 277-2321 during the summer and further further amazed at the great numbers of different birds now passing through to their winter homes in the south. In the past we were certainly aware of the robins, the sparrows, the crows, blackbirds, starlings. - which are ever so evident. But with the identification book and a pair of field glasses a whole new world of birds opened up for us and these have been around for years. One becomes becomes more conscious of the different species and you begin to take a closer look at a bird and not see it solely as a silouette. Our first problem came even around home with the problem of identifying the different breeds of sparrows. There are hundreds under this species and there are a number of different kinds right in your own backyard. It is difficult to make identifies tion and one surely needs more than a few months experience. At the present time, September, September, the bushes are full of Warblers making their way from the north and here again it is most frustrating to make breed indentification, -there are again hundreds of different different kinds flying through the country. Mr. Jim Richards, a noted local authority on birds and living in the O'Chonski subdivision subdivision told us last week he had made thirty-five different identification in his own backyard within a period of forty-five minutes. Bird watching and identification identification certainly creates a challenge and most amazing of all we really do not know what is about us as far as birds are concerned and even in our own back yard.
