Council finally agreed that the site for the proposed headquarters should be at the present location on Rossland Road in Whitby but that decision came only after lengthy council debate. Four members of council, all representatives from Oshawa, Oshawa, were opposed to selecting selecting a site at this time, suggesting that a study be made prior to the region's committing itself to any particular municipality. The issue has been before the management committee for some time and has been of particular concern since three of the region's departments have been forced to locate in areas other than at the Rossland Road site. Planning and development and the public worlts department department are both located at Consumers Drive in Whitby while social services has been located on Simcoe Street in northern Oshawa. The regional finance committee committee has also been forced to re-locate some of its operations operations from the main building on Rossland Road - to two portable office buildings located located to the rear of that building. At Wednesday's council meeting, Coun. Jim Potticary (Oshawa) called the recommendation recommendation to utilize the present present site as the location for a regional headquarters "pre- Coun. Ken Lyall (Newcastle) urged council to not "get carried away" on the subject of a regional headquarters. "The people on the street are talking against regional, government now because of what it is costing them," Coun. Lyall said, "and here you people are talking about enlarging the place". Counc. George Ashe, Picker- ing^ said the recommendation was "long overdue". RIGHT LOCATION "I think this (Whitby) is the right location," Coun. Ashe said, "it's easily accessible". Meeting set over arena well The Town of Newcastle council set a special meeting, September 10th, to consider their plight in the matter of the water supply at the Darlington Arena. The $850,000 arena was opened in Hampton last winter fully operational with a drilled well for water supply. During the winter sand and clay was appearing in the water and the Town has paid a bill of $7,500 to truck water to the sports centre. Since that time and during the summer a number of wells were drilled on the site and on the public works department site just east of the arena. ' The well drillers have momentarily momentarily left the site but according to Mayor Rickard will return. It now appears that it must be decided just how much water is required to operate the arena during the winter and this matter is to be cleared up at the September 10th meeting. Councillor Cowman was somewhat upset when it yvas not known how much water was required for the operation of the arena.
