-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, September 24, 1975 f 1 an editorial IT HAS BEEN A LONG ROAD Ultimate goals are seldom achieved in the course of a few hours or days. They are obtained through planning, work and a high degree of dedication. These factors are, to a great extent, the underlining reasons for the Moffatt and NDP success last Thursday in the riding of Durham East. Not to be forgotten is a partial swing away from the Tories and a so-called slap on the wrist of the leader. Stephen Lewis certainly provided the alternative as far as a leader was concerned and in a new mood gave leadership and strength to the riding associations as well as the people of Ontario. He held his party to clear-cut policies, saving farm land, rising costs of energy and food, as well as housing. Never did he mention anything associated with socialism such as provincial operated car insurance. Congratulations are certainly in order to Mr. Doug Moffatt who for at least eight years has worked towards the cause of the NDP party and his ultimate election to the legislature. The same congratulations go to his workers and supporters. Not to be forgotten are all people who assisted in the democratic process which does exist in Canada whether they worked for theNDP, the Conservatives, the Liberals or the Social Credit. It is these workers and supporters who do make the process work and provide the general public with a choice of candidates and viewpoints. To say the least the Provincial legislature, now with a minority government, and with the NDP and Liberals also with a goodly number of members, will be most interesting. The NDP will be in a position, being the official opposition, to drive home those policies which they put before the electors of this province in the election campaign. The policies are basic to everyone and do need this time. -- Kirby news The community was deeply saddened by the passing of Miss Marion McKelvey lifetime lifetime resident of this area on Thursday, September 18th at Oshawa General Hospital. LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Dear Sir: Please let it be understood by your readers that my attitude concerning the Rice Construction Company Mobile Mobile Home plan is simply to provide badly needed retirement retirement homes for retired citizens. citizens. Is my attitude so very wrong? Consider these facts... 1. Ken Lyall and Kirk Entwisle were elected to their Regional positions both stating that they were opposed to this project. It was in fact, THE ISSUE of that election. 2. In January of 1974 the. Clarke Township Planning Board announced its opposition opposition to an amendment presently presently before the Ministry which would have permitted permitted the Rice project. 3. In Feb. of 1974 the Northumberland & Durham School Board - announced their opposition of this project. 4. In May of 1974 a report by Ms. Jean Monteith, a municipal municipal planning consultant, expressed opposition to the Rice Plan...a) lack of suitable suitable access (over a rail crossing) ; b) isolation; c)l lack of commercial and social services) ; d) quality of environment re housing. This project is immediately adjacent to a njain rail line and righ on the beautiful, damp and smelly «shores of Lake Ontario. Although here here basic objections did not relate to quality or class, she suggested an inference of low cost, economical housing. With the Smallest unit at $25,000.00 and a monthly service contract of at least $100.00 (figures as of Sept. 1974 exclusive of heat, hydro & phone) they are definately not low cost or economical. 5. In July of 1974 Mr. George Howden, Town of Newcastle Planning Office, submitted a report with 14 reasons why he felt this % project should be rejected. We pay this* man for - his expert opinion...do you suppose all his reasons were invalid? 6. In July of 1974, in a 5-4 vote, moved by Doug Moffatt and seconded by Mr. Lyall, "that the Planning Advisory Advisory Committee of the Town of Newcastle recommend to Council that the amend- deplorable Allan Lawrence, a former- member of the Ontario-Legis- lature, has been reported to have stated on Friday of last week that the Progressive Conservatives waged a deplorable deplorable election campaign in 1975. Allan Lawrence, former Conservative attorney general general who resigned to run ment to the Clarke Township Township Official Plan be withdrawn"...to withdrawn"...to halt the Rice project. 7. In Feb. of 1975, through the spring, thebe were further meetings and confrontations confrontations Concerning the Official Plan and specifically the zoning of the area involving the Rice project. 8. Sept, of 1975...still on the Merry-Go- Round. Thoughts to ponder... 1. This land is prime agricultural agricultural land and where are we going to draw the line? 2. Is this the IDEAL location for a subdivision? 3. Do we NEED 1000 "instant units"? 4. Can we SERVICE 2000 "instant people"? Bell Telephone Telephone and Ontario Hydro seem to be having their problems ! 5. Would YOU invest $25,000.00 in a trailer, and sign a 2 years lease with a 1 developer? 6. Do we need integrated and balanced population or 2000 semi-senior citizens? 7. Do you really believe in segregating older folks? I don't! 8. Does anyone in this area, with the exception of Mr. Rice and Mr. Lovekin of course, favor this project? It was most unfortunate Mr. Entwisle missed the last vote on this issue. And Mr. Lyall, don't give in now! This was your issue Gentlemen, and I trust still is. Further, we have always had Mayor Rickard opposing this project. Where did Council get the notion there was no opposition? And, Mrs. Cowman, your father may be beautiful, but I would appreciate it very much if you would talk to Mr Lyall, Mr. Entwisle, Mr Rickard and ME! Hoping to see you all, and many of my friends and neighbours on the 25th, I am, Yours sincerely, Susan M. Sawyer. Box 212, Orono Phone 983-5693 Check your HEATING SYSTEM*NOW!
